SCHOOL BOSS EARNS HARVARD DOCTORATE

Now it's appropriate to address Wayne Harris as "doctor."

Since Harris became Roanoke's school superintendent nearly two yews ago, some people have wondered whether he should be addressed that way.

They knew he was working on his doctoral degree, but they weren't quite sure of the status. There is no longer any uncertainity.

Harris has completed the requirements for a doctorate from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education.

He recently completed his dissertation on ``Identification and Analysis of Significant Factors that Influenced Black Male Junior and Senior High School Students to Take Pre-college Math.''

Harris' thesis advisor, Barbara Neufeld , said that his research was meaningful and significant.

``His research is founded in real experiences and provides useful information for educators to draw upon to address peer, home and school influences which affect academic success for adolescent black males,'' Neufeld said.

Harris is the third candidate of the first nine students who entered the Harvard Urban Superintendency doctoral program to receive his degree.

Nelson Harris, chairman of the Roanoke School Board, said that the doctoral degree confirms what the board members knew.

``He has brought to Roanoke the skills and leadership necessary for moving an urban school division forward,'' Nelson Harris said. ``This is evidenced by his emphasis upon school safety, rigorous academic programs and the expansion of school technology in the classroom.''

Wayne Harris, a Salem native, has been Roanoke's superintendent since July 1, 1993. He worked for the Fairfax County school system for 25 years before coming to Roanoke.
