PARRY MCCLUER HANDS GLENVAR 1ST PIONEER LOSS

BUENA VISTA - Glenvar took an eight-point lead in the first quarter, but Parry McCluer outscored the Highlanders in each of the last three quarters - including 19-8 in the fourth - en route to a 62-53 Pioneer District boys' victory Friday night.

The loss was Glenvar's first in the district this season.

Brandon Garrett led the Fighting Blues (12-5 overall, 5-3 Pioneer) with a game-high 28 points. Mike McElroy added 19, including seven points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Cory Willis poured in 15 points for the Highlanders (8-4, 3-1), including three 3-pointers. Jason Darnell added 13 points.

Alleghany 57

The Terriers rebounded from back-to-back losses, using 3-point shooting to get by the Mountaineers and earn their first Blue Ridge District victory.

Alleghany concentrated on shutting down the inside play of Shannon Williams, who finished with 10 points. The scheme opened the 3-point shooting for host Lord Botetourt (8-6, 1-3), which scored 21 points from beyond the 3-point arc.

Jonathan Neal led the Terriers with 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Ryan Salvi added nine points, all on 3-pointers.

Once again, however, the Terriers were denied at the free-throw line. Alleghany made 14 of 26 attempts, while Lord Botetourt was 3-of-7.

``It wasn't a pretty offensive scheme, but you've got to take what they give you,'' said Don Meredith, Lord Botetourt's coach. ``We're just tickled to get a win.''

Alleghany (8-5, 1-3) was led by James Hughes with 22 points and Rashad Worth with 17.

Fieldale-Collinsville 62

MARTINSVILLE - Darrell Wilson scored 22 of his 25 points in the second half as the Lancers overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat the Cavaliers in the Piedmont District.

Fieldale-Collinsville (11-5, 10-3) led by 12 points at halftime, but Laurel Park opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run to get back into the game.

In the first half, the Lancers (10-4, 10-2) made five of 24 field-goal attempts. In the second half, they countered by making 20 of 25 and outrebounded the Cavaliers 19-5 in the last two quarters.

Warrick Scott, Girard Foster and Rashad Wall each scored 10 points for Laurel Park.

Mancino Craighead and Nat Law each scored 10 points for Fieldale-Collinsville.

NEW CASTLE - David Buzzard scored 17 points and Kris Phillips added 16 as the Chargers rolled past the Rockets in a Pioneer District matchup.

Bath County (9-4, 4-2) shot 49 percent from the field and held Craig County to 32 percent as it defeated the Rockets for the second time in two days. Craig County (3-10, 1-6) cut its deficit to six twice in the final period, but could get no closer.

Matt Williams and Stewart Alexander each scored 12 for the Chargers.

Craig County's Robby Huffman led all scorers with 23 points and Jamie Fisher had 12.

Magna Vista 71

Patrick County 68

RIDGEWAY - Leroy Valentine scored seven of his 19 points in overtime to lead the Warriors past the Cougars in a Piedmont District game.

Valentine made all five of his free throws in the extra period and hit a field goal to help Magna Vista (5-9, 5-8) open an eight-point lead.

Patrick County made hit close when Ray Hylton and Christian Batchelor hit 3-pointers late in overtime, but the Cougars could not get any closer than the final margin. Hylton finished with 14 points and Jason Wood led Patrick County with 15.

The Warriors also got 17 from Tony Hagwood, who had eight in the fourth quarter as they came from behind to tie the score. Teammates Elliot Millner and Craig Tatum added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Martinsville 72

DRY FORK - Mike Martin scored a game-high 29 points, and the Bulldogs hit some key free throws late in the game to pull away from the Trojans in a Piedmont District game.

Martin scored 20 of his points in the second half, and Martinsville outscored Tunstall 25-14 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

Jeremy Wells and Jason Agnew each hit two free throws late in the game for the Bulldogs (11-4, 11-2). Wells finished with 10 points and Agnew had 14.

Ronta Harris led the Trojans (5-10, 3-9) with 22 points. Lynwood Petty added 10.

CHATHAM - The Cavaliers tried to make a run from 10 points down at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Bengals hit enough free throws to ice the Piedmont District game.

Chatham made its run in the fourth with 3-pointers. Scott Whitt connected on two of his attempts from long range, and finished the game with 11 points. Marcus Luck led Chatham with 16 points.

Tyree Hariston led Bassett to its ninth victory of the season, scoring a game-high 21 points. Devon Claybrooks tossed in 10 points.

MARTINSVILLE - The Chiefs set a school record for points as they reeled off more than 100 points for the third consecutive game in a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Tigers.

Lamont Franklin, Kevin Warren, Rod Mitchell and Joseph McClinton each scored more than 20 points for Carlisle (14-2, 8-1), which will be out to avenge its only conference loss Tuesday when it visits North Cross.

The Chiefs hit 11 3-pointers and scored 40 points in the fourth quarter as they overwhelmed Hargrave (8-4, 4-4).

Pete Short led the Tigers with 21 points.

FORT CHISWELL - Jody Burnett scored 19 points and Kevin Beasley added 10 as the Pioneers dropped the Maroon Tide in the Mountain Empire District.

Tito Crockett led Galax with 17 points.

Brad Hughes fueled the Fort Chiswell (8-6, 3-1) offense with 12 assists.

Bland 75

BLAND - Shannon Havens led a balanced attack with 25 points as the Rockets won a Mountain Empire District game.

David Lambert had 17 points and Andy Selfe added 13 for Bland (6-6, 1-2), which led by 11 points at halftime and poured it on in the fourth quarter.

Narrows got 18 points from Patrick Bailey.

Lebanon 77

Rural Retreat 27

RURAL RETREAT - The Pioneers jumped on the Indians, outscoring them 21-1 in the first quarter en route to a Hogoheegee District victory.

Ben Hilton led the Lebanon offense, scoring a game-high 22 points. Nathan McGloughlin added 13 as the Pioneers stayed undefeated in the district.

Kenny Lethco and Barry Ward led Rural Retreat (1-12, 1-8) with six points apiece.
