DEFICIT FIRST

THE ROANOKE-Southwest Virginia chapter of the Concord Coalition, a national nonpartisan organization of fiscal conservatives, has sent a constructive message to elected officials in Washington: Focus on cutting spending, not taxes.

At a recent meeting of the local chapter, a majority in attendance expressed support for spending cuts over tax cuts, so that progress toward deficit reduction won't be lost. In a letter to federal elected officials, former U.S. Rep. Jim Olin, co-chairman of the Concord Coalition chapter, cited the meeting's sentiment.

If that doesn't impress our representatives, maybe this fact should, also cited by Olin: An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll indicates that the public favors deficit reduction over tax cuts by 65 percent to 28 percent.
