BERRY, H.C., (``Bob""), 62, of Roanoke, died Sunday, January 29, 1995, in a local hospital. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. and a retired Product Manager for Norfolk Southern Railway. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Berry of Roanoke; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Berry and Kenny Gusler of Roanoke, Deborah Berry and John Robertson of Salem; four grandsons, Matthew Berry Robertson, Ian Hundley Robertson both of Salem, Steven and Michael Gusler, both of Roanoke; two sisters, Doris Berry Knight of North Charleston, S.C., Katherine Berry Kirkpatrick of Goose Creek, S.C. A funeral mass of the resurrection will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. James M. Fosnot officiating. KARNES, Frank Wingfield, Sr., 70, of 710 Longwood Ave., Bedford, died Friday, January 27, 1995, at his residence. He was a retired employee of Rubatex. Mr. Karnes was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II, having served in the European Theatre. He was a member of the 567th A.A.A. (A.W.) Battalion, Btry. D. He was a member of Bedford Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Lena H. Karnes; two daughters, Christina Karnes, Roxanna Karnes; a son, Frank W. Karnes Jr.; and five grandchildren, all of Philadelphia, Pa. A military service will be conducted Thursday in the Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, N.J., at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
KING, Mary Stafford, of Ashland, formerly of Narrows, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, at her home. Born in Bland County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Porter and Celestia Conley Stafford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. King and a granddaughter, Rachael McGuire. She was a member of the Hales Chapel Methodist Church for many years, and the Kenwood United Methodist Church the past fifteen years. She was an active member of several Christian Women's Groups; Mended Hearts and Bells and Beaux in Richmond. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia King, Ashland, Pamela Thorne, Narrows; two brothers, Dr. William Stafford, and Ronald Stafford, both of Narrows; and a sister, Carol Swiader, Virginia Beach. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, at Hales Chapel United Methodist Church, Narrows. Interment will follow at Boyd's Cemetery, Narrows. SANDRIDGE, Louise Wade, 84, of Raphine, died Sunday, January 29, 1995, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born October 24, 1910, in Rockbridge Co., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Albert Wade and Mary Bolen Wade. Mrs. Sandrige was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Olton Sandridge and one son, Howard O. Sandridge Jr. Surviving are three sons, George L. Sandridge, Brownsburg, Harold T. Sandridge, F orest, Clyde C. Sandridge, Staunton; five sisters, Emma Lam, Staunton, Barbara Wade, Lexington, Ruby Emore, Lexington, Peggy Hayes, Buena Vista, Rebecca Figgat, Lexington; three brothers, Thomas Albert Wade Jr., Virginia Beach, Carl Wade and Joe Wade, both of Lexington; eleven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren. SHANKS, Elizabeth Ramsaur, 82, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, at Heritage Hall Health Care Blacksburg. She was born in Jacksonville, Fla. on July 19, 1912, moving to North Carolina in 1953, and moved to Virginia in 1993. Mrs. Shanks was active in her church, the Episcopal Church Women of the N.C. Diocese, the Cursillo movement, as well as civic and volunteer work. Surviving are sons, David O'Neal Shanks, Christiansburg, Robert Gray Shanks, Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 3, 1995, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 3506 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, N.C. where she was a member. The Rev. Fred Warneke will officiate. SHIVELY, Geneva Carrie Francis Gillispie, 76 and 10 months, of Ferrum, died Monday, January 30, 1995 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was a resident of Woodhaven Nursing Home in Montvale at the time of her death. She now resides in Heaven with her Lord Jesus Christ. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Kermit E. Shively, Ferrum; her sons, Jimmy Shively and wife Betty, Rod Shively and wife Judy, Steve Shively and wife Jane; daughter, Margo Brake and husband Johnnie. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Ola) Jefferson, Danville, Mrs. Ellis (Edith) Davis, San Jose, California. She is also survived by two brothers, Roscoe Gillispie and wife Glenda, Bassett, William Cody Gillispie and wife, Mabel, Chicago, Ill.; half brother, Lane Shively and wife Jane, Bassett. She was preceded in death by her brother, Alonza Gillispie and is survived by his wife, Hazel Gillispie, Chicago, Ill.; and also many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Shively was a longtime member of Maple Grove Methodist Church of Ferrum and more recently, the First Church of the Brethren of Ferrum. She was active in the Womens Group at Maple Grove and was also a member of the choir. Mrs. Shively was employed for many years by Steven's Fabrics and later retired from Ferrum College, after working many years in the college bookstore. Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Ed Scearce and the Rev. Lowell (Woody) Stovall officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.
