AVALANCHE TELEVISION DEBUT SET

The first Carolina League baseball game to be televised from Salem will be played April 30, the Salem Avalanche baseball club announced Tuesday.

The 3 p.m. matchup with the Frederick Keys will be carried by WDBJ (Channel 7) as part of the station's recognition of Salem's new professional baseball stadium, currently under construction, and part of WDBJ's 40th anniversary celebration. The station's sports director, Mike Stevens, and meteorologist, Robin Reed, will call the action.

In other sports news in the region:

Sophomore defensive end Cornell Brown of Lynchburg was named Virginia Tech's Most Valuable Player at the banquet Saturday night honoring the Hokies' 1994 football team.

Brown, who was selected by a vote of Tech players, had 11 sacks and nine other tackles for losses in the Hokies' 8-4 season.

Other award winners included: tight end Kevin Martin (outstanding senior); special-teamer Chris Peduzzi (John William Schneider award for excellence in athletics, academics and leadership); and special-teamer William Ferrell (Paul Frederick Cobb award for a non-starter who showed the most enthusiasm).

Position awards went to Brown (defensive lineman); George DelRicco (linebacker); William Yarborough (defensive back); Chris Malone (offensive lineman); Bryan Still (receiver); Dwayne Thomas (offensive back); and Robbie Colley (specialist).

Despite losing to Roanoke College on Saturday, Hampden-Sydney retained the No.1 spot in the NCAA Division III South Region men's basketball poll.

Roanoke (13-5), which beat the Tigers (15-2) in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game 73-63, is ranked fourth. Bridgewater (13-6) is No.7.

Christopher Newport (12-6), fourth in the Dixie Conference standings, is ranked sixth.

In the women's poll, the Ferrum women were No.7, while Randolph-Macon was No.8.(Polls in Scoreboard. B2)

The Virginia Tech Duals wrestling meet, postponed Jan.4 because of a schedule conflict at Cassell Coliseum, will be held Sunday. Action starts at noon, and the competing teams are Tech, Old Dominion, North Carolina-Greensboro and Howard.In noon matches, Old Dominion faces North Carolina-Greensboro and Tech takes on Howard; at 1:30 p.m., it's ODU vs. Howard and Tech vs. UNCG; and at 3 p.m., UNCG meets Howard and Tech takes on ODU.
