WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Auditions at Barter

ABINGDON - Barter Theatre will hold auditions for area performers from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 24 and 25 by appointment.

Auditions will be for professional and apprentice performers. Candidates would have to be available for day and evening performances and rehearsals.

Barter is a member of the League of Resident Theaters employing professional actors and apprentices considering a professional stage career.

``Because of our reputation of high-quality acting at Barter,'' said Richard Rose, artistic director, ``many of the local performers have been afraid to audition. We have, however, discovered some really wonderful local and regional performers over the last two years who have found their opportunity here at Barter.''

Barter's 1995 season includes ``On the Third Day,'' ``The Glass Menagerie,'' ``Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,'' ``Dr. Jekyll and Miss Hyde,'' ``The Sweet By and By,'' ``Forever Plaid,'' ``Dangerous Corner,'' ``Amadeus'' and ``An O. Henry Christmas.'' Roles for children and teens are available in ``Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.''

Auditions can be scheduled by calling 628-2281, extension 325.

Symphony concert

RICHLANDS - The Roanoke Symphony will accompany about 150 singers in an April 2 concert near Richlands featuring actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. narrating one of the compositions, Aaron Copeland's ``A Lincoln Portrait.''

Other compositions on the program include ``Thinking Like a Mountain,'' narrated by Don Smith and composed by symphony conductor Victoria Bond; ``Suite of the Southwest'' by Gideon Waldrop, and Gershwin's ``Rhapsody in Blue,'' performed by pianist Pavlina Dokovska accompanied by the Roanoke Symphony.

The 4 p.m. concert will be held on the campus of Southwest Virginia Community College. Admission is $5. Bond will also do a pre-concert program called ``Illuminations'' at 3 p.m.

Area singers from Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell and Tazewell counties will perform arrangements of ``Battle Hymn of the Republic,'' ``Amazing Grace,'' ``Stars and Stripes'' and a medley from ``Phantom of the Opera.''

The concert is part of the college's Festival of the Arts, with this year's theme being ``From Sea to Shining Sea: A Celebration of American Arts.''
