DUBLIN EXPRESS STOP STOPPED

It had to happen sometime. Somebody finally beat Dublin Express Stop in the Pulaski Men's Basketball League.

Stevens Funeral Home downed Express Stop 68-49, ending a its 58-game winning streak.

MIKE SAMSON scored a game-high 21 points, leading four Stevens players in double-figures on a hot-shooting night. RANDY OLVERSON added 16, RON SHELBURNE 12 and DENNIS SHREWSBERRY 10.

Defensively, a 2-3 zone by Stevens prevented Express Stop from getting its half-court game going. And the hot shooting meant few opportunities for transition baskets for Express Stop.

DAVID SMITH paced Express Stop with 14 points, and TIM PENN had 13.

The loss set up a three-way tie for the league lead between Stevens, Express Stop and L.R. Davis. All three teams were 12-1 with one regular-season game to go. Each team is 1-1 against the other two, so tournament time should prove interesting.

The tournaments - Major for teams with winning records and Minor for teams with losing marks - get under way this week. The finals for both single-elimination events are Feb. 26.
