Bassett directors pick vice presidents

Directors of Bassett Furniture Industries Inc. elected two corporate vice presidents at their organization meeting Wednesday.

They are J. Stanley Payne, who also is vice president and general counsel, and Johne Albanese, director of advertising.

Michael Norris, who heads the Impact manufacturing division based in Hickory, N.C., was elected an operating vice president.

The board meeting followed a brief annual meeting of stockholders at which 11 outside directors were re-elected. Five other directors who are officers of the company stepped down because the company had too many inside directors under current rules of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Chairman Robert H. Spilman described to stockholders the company's new Bassett Direct Plus program, which was announced in October. Under the new program, the two independent dealers participating display and sell only Bassett products.
