Music scholarship contest set for Feb. 25

The Blacksburg Host Lions Club will sponsor the Bland Music Scholarship Contest on Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. at Virginia Tech's Squires Recital Salon.

The contest is open to any instrumentalist or vocalist from the Roanoke Valley and Blacksburg area enrolled in school below the college level. Prizes of $50 and $35 will be offered to first- and second-place winners, respectively, in each category. Winners of the local contest will have the chance to compete at the district and state levels against winners from other districts in Virginia. State winners will receive scholarships ranging from $300 to $1500.

The Annual Bland Music Scholarship Program was established in 1948 by the Virginia Association of Lions Clubs to honor James A. "Jimmy" Bland, a composer of American folk songs, most notably, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny."

Interested participants must register by today. Registration forms may be obtained through the schools' music departments or by calling Joe Donckers of the Blacksburg Host Lions Club at (703) 552-2317.

Church preschool registration has begun

Registration has begun for the fall session of the South Roanoke United Methodist Church Weekday Preschool.

Classes are open to children 15 months to 5 years of age. They range from one-day sessions to five, according to the age of the child. Classes are from 9 a.m. to noon each weekday.

The fall session begins the Tuesday after Labor Day and continues through the Friday before Memorial Day.

CITGO/MDA golf card available

The CITGO Muscular Dystrophy Association Golf Card is available for a $25 donation. The card is good for a round of golf at 19 courses in the area plus a special offer at a driving range.

All proceeds from the cards are used by the MDA to provide program services to local MDA families in Southwest and central Virginia.

Stock market game winners announced

Lord Botetourt High School's team placed first in the region in the 1994 Fall Stock Market Game in which more than 180 teams competed.

The team, which consisted of Michelle Warden, Angie Horn, Jamie Breeding and Kerey Craft, earned a game profit of $19,240 on their original investment of $100,000 in play money. Dan Higdon was the team's adviser.

A team consisting of third- and fourth-graders from Grandin Court Elementary School was second in the region. The team included Nick Viar, Adam Painter, Missy Bonestele, Elizabeth Varney and Holly Elliott, with Allison Moreth as adviser. They made a $12,350 profit on their investment. The team also placed 16th in the state.

J.W. Willard's two-member team of Jason Irvin and W.K. Smith made a $10,903 profit to rank Rural Retreat High School third in the area and 18th in the state.

The game was sponsored by Virginia Commonwealth University, and locally by Virginia Tech, Wheatfirst Butcher Singer and the Roanoke Times & World-News. Funding also was provided by First Virginia Bank Southwest, J.C. Bradford & Co. and Scott Stringfellow.

Transportation group elects new officers

William W. McClintic recently was elected president of the board of directors of Unified Human Services Transportation System Inc.

Other officers elected were: Debbie H. Pitts, vice president; Claude L. Reynolds, secretary; and Arlene W. Stoller, treasurer.

Keith A. Hoelzer and Stebbins W. Hubard were elected to the board.

Roanoke festival offering scholarships

Roanoke Festival in the Park is accepting applications for three scholarships to graduating high school seniors or college freshman planning further studies in the arts.

The scholarships, for $1,000, $750 and $500, are for students whose parents' permanent residences are within 100 miles of Roanoke and who are studying music, dance, painting, drawing, sculpture, theater and writing.

This year, the $1,000 scholarship will be dedicated to the memory of Roanoke artist John Will Creasy.

Deadline is April 17.

Applications are available through high schools and colleges, or by calling the festival office at 342-2640.

RAVE elects officers for 1995

The Roanoke Alliance for the Visually Enabled has selected Paul Hammock for its 1995 president.

Other officers chosen were: Ed Walker, vice president; Dianne Decker, secretary; and Carolyn Zimmerman, treasurer.

Valley Beautiful elects 1995 officers

Lucy Ellett has been elected president of Valley Beautiful Inc. for 1995.

Also elected as officers are: Charles Blankenship, vice president; Ann Weaver, secretary; and William Hubbard, treasurer.

Members selected to serve on the board were: Peggy Davis, Robert H. Fetzer, Linda L. Holsinger, Robert A. Hope, Douglas C. Waters, Carolyn Wharton and Virginia Lee Wolfe.

Valley Beautiful is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the beautification of the Roanoke Valley.

MS group seeking volunteers, walkers

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is seeking walkers and volunteers for an April 1 walkathon to be held in Roanoke.

Participants who raise $125 or more will be entered in a national drawing for a pair of round-trip tickets for two to Rome. Two sets of domestic round-trip tickets from TWA also will be awarded.

Money raised by walkers supports national research for a cure. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that affects young adults.

Roanoke Memorial Hospitals needs volunteers to answer phones, greet the public, deliver mail, flowers and balloons to patients, and do light clerical work.

The YWCA of Roanoke Valley has announced the names of new officers elected to serve for the 1995 year.

They are: Virginia "Ginny" Allison, president; Elizabeth "Ibby" Greer, president-elect; Gloria Reiske, vice president; Agness Henderson, treasurer; and Delores Y. Johns, secretary.

Reading group seeks children's books

The Roanoke Valley Reading Council, in conjunction with area Kroger stores, is sponsoring a book collection to gather children's books for needy families in Roanoke.

Books will be collected Saturday from 10 am. to 1 p.m. at the following Kroger stores: Spartan Square, Salem; Towne Square and Tanglewood, Roanoke; and Lake Drive Plaza, Vinton.

Please plan to donate used and/or new books suitable for children ages 2-18.
