IN SCHOOL

ROANOKE COLLEGE has awarded its Distinguished Service Award to Margaret "Peggy" Akers, a resource development assistant since 1982; Leah Russel, a Roanoke college graduate who has worked at Roanoke College since 1982 and has served as assistant dean and registrar since 1987; and Robert Shupe, a member of the colleges grounds crew since 1988.

The Distinguished Service Award was established six years ago by the college in order to recognize the outstanding accomplishments and distinguished service of staff members.

ROANOKE COLLEGE inducted seven students into the Virginia Delta Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national honor scholarship society, during the fall semester. They are Michael E. Fadorick; S. Kyle Highfill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Highfill II; Anthony M. Hopper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benton C. Hopper; Amy L. Rader, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Rader; David M. Fitzgerald; and Deborah F. Hall.

FERRUM COLLEGE, has announced the names of students named to the fall semester dean's list. They are: Jason L. Beheler, son of James and Janice Beheler of Roanoke, liberal arts; Leigh D. Carter, son of Rebecca Carter of Roanoke and Leigh Carter, outdoor recreation; Angela L. Conroy of Roanoke, environmental science; and Thomas L. Mollette, son of Ruth Lorene Mollette of Salem, art.

DAVID ALDERMAN, son of Nelson and Patricia Alderman of Vinton, recently received first place in the Voice of Democracy audio essay scholarship competition. He also placed second in the Sixth District judging.

His entry was "My Vision for America." This nationwide scholarship program is sponsored annually by The Veterans of Foreign Wars of The United States of America and the Ladies Auxiliary.

Alderman is a sophomore at William Byrd High School.

ANDREW N. HURST JR, son of Andy and Cathy Hurst of Roanoke, has made the dean's list at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

ROANOKE COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students at the college who have been named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

AMANDA GAIL FRAZIER, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edwin R. Frazier of Roanoke, has been named to the fall term dean's list at Mars Hill College in North Carolina.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY has announced the names of Roanoke Valley residents who were named to its president's list for the fall semester.

They are: Pamela S. Bogunia, Amanda E. Burks, Alison C. Dickey, Erin A. Doyle and Christopher C. Walker, all of Roanoke; and Kerry L. Addington, Holly S. Beasley, Gwendolyn G. Hoskins, Kimberly A. Keffer and Derek S. Lam of Salem.

The school also named several Roanoke-area students named to its dean's list for the 1994 fall semester.

AMANDA PHILLIPS of Roanoke and ERIC NORDBERG of Daleville were named to the dean's list at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

Phillips, a 1993 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, is a junior majoring in Spanish and international studies. Nordberg, a 1991 graduate of Shrewsburg High School, is a senior majoring in biology.

CYNTHIA BRIGGS of Roanoke has received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES' Alpha Sigma Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has inducted 18 Roanoke Valley students: Barrie Ann Knox, Daleville; Angela D. Garman and Cheryl L. Crowder, both of Salem; Alvin W. Overstreet, Troutville; Kristi L. Haupt, Vinton; Deborah M. Humphreys, Richard V. Sherwood, Barbara S. Breister, Dena M. Cassese, Wanda C. Corbin, Karen L. Haynie, Susan M. Hughes, Anne M. King, Michelle L. Reynolds, Denise T. Robertson, Krista M. Weddle, Traci M. Farmer and Kimberley Furrow, all of Roanoke.

Chapter officers for 1994-95 are Sean Albert of Roanoke, president; Victoria Klostermann of Roanoke, vice president; Melanie Swanson of Vinton, treasurer; Michele Howell of Roanoke, recording secretary; and Karen Baker and Linda Galletto, both of Roanoke, publicity chairwomen.
