COUPLE GIVES W&L $3 MILLION

Washington and Lee University has received a $3 million gift from Frances and Sydney Lewis of Richmond, co-founders of Best Products Inc. and longtime university benefactors.

The gift honoring W&L President John Wilson and his wife, Anne Wilson, was announced Saturday at a meeting of the university's board of trustees. Wilson retires in June after 13 years at W&L. The money will be used for scholarships and financial aid.

The Lewises gave $9 million to W&L in 1972 to build a law school. They also have set up honor scholarships, supported a law school addition for the papers of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell and provided other philanthropy to the university.

Sydney Lewis graduated from W&L in 1940. Both he and his wife have served on the board of trustees.
