AKERS, Pearl Lena, 87, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, February 25, 1995, at her home. She was the widow of Edward Akers. She is survived by two daughters, Rachel Hixon, Christiansburg, Calaudine Bowles, Elliston; one granddaughter, Sherry Hixon Shell, Salem; two grandsons, Jerry Hixon, Edward Bowles, both of Christiansburg. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Riverview Holiness Church conducted by Rev. Ellis Meredith and Rev. Billy Wells with burial in the Reesedale Cemetery. BRUNING, Katherine Veronica Sugrue, 84, of Bedford, died Friday, February 24, 1995 at Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Walter S. Bruning and was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church. Mrs. Bruning was born in New Haven, Conn., July 18, 1910, a daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Clifford Sugrue. Mrs. Bruning was a retired employee of Sargent Lock Company. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Phil (Joan) Castellon of Moneta; a son, John Walter Bruning, of Knoxville, Md.; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A Christian Wake Service will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be side in St. Lawrence's Catholic Church, New Haven, Conn. Tuesday at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the Sisk Brothers Funeral Home of New Haven, Conn. Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and at Carder-Tharp following the wake service. Buri al will be in the St. Lawrence's Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

CAMDEN, CRTT Steven Mark, 34, of Lexington, died Friday, February 24, 1995 in Charlottesville, Va. He was born May 5, 1960 in Lexington, a son of Evelyn Jean Camden, Buena Vista and the late Jessie James Camden. Mr. Camden attended Parry McCluer High School and graduated from Houston Public City School in 1979. He graduated from the College of Health Sciences with a degree in Respiratory Therapy. He was placed on the Deans List of Distinguished Students in 1992. Mr. Camden was a Respiratory Therapist with Danville Community Hospital. He was also a gifted artist and attended the Buena Vista Church of God of Prophecy. Surviving, in addition to his mo ther, is a dear friend, Cindy Hayes; four sisters, Marilyn P. Farris, Fairfield, Rita F. Mason, Hinton, Melissa J. Hamm, Lexington, Tabetha J. Camden, Buena Vista; four brothers, Timothy Camden, Buena Vista, Jason Camden, Lexington, Samuel Camden, Lexington, Paul Camden, Fuquay-Varina, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 1995 at the Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. J. Art Brumit officiating. COLES, John Dabney Sr., of Roanoke, died Saturday, February 25, 1995, from Alzheimers disease. He was a partner in Coles Egg Farm on Bent Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Betsy Lancaster Coles; sons, John Dabney Coles Jr. and Martin Douglas Coles, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina Ann and Angus Stephens, Greensboro, N.C.; two granddaughters, Jacelyn Elizabeth Stephens and Ava Page Stephens; one brother, Skeezix Coles, Wirtz; sisters, Mary H. Coles, Martha C. Flora, both of Roanoke, Lois C. Phipps, Abingdon. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Monday, February 27, 1995 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Thomas P. DIEHL, John Frederick Sr., 76, of Roanoke, died Saturday, February 25, 1995, at this home. He was a veteran of WW II. Mr. Diehl was a retired vice president of Diehl Inc. in Defiance, Ohio. He was president of the Franklin Milk Co. in Jonesboro, Tenn. He resided in Defiance, Ohio until 1956 and lived in Johnson City, Tenn. from 1956 until 1987 when he moved to Roanoke. He was past president of the Chamber of Commerce in Johnson City, Tenn. Mr. Diehl was always active in civic and community affairs and his church. He was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Johnson City, and Windsor Hills United Methodist Church in Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie G. Diehl and his parents, Albert F. Diehl and Emma S. Diehl. John was dearly loved by the lives he touched. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Hudson Diehl; children, Debbie and Dave Tanis, Barbie and J. C. Winstead, John and Carla Diehl, and Judy Diehl; grandchildren, Mark Tanis, Katie Tanis, Kelly Pollock, John Pollock, Caroline Diehl, Charlotte Diehl, and Jimmy Diehl; step children and grandchildren Robin Poteet, Suzy, Dick, Chris and Emily Peverall, Chris, Lee and Sally Hudson, Anne, Jeff, Ben and Moss Armistead; brother, William A. DUNCAN, Alfred Johnny, 78, of Christiansburg, died Saturday morning, February 25, 1995 at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Shawsville. Born November 11, 1916, he was the son of the late Enoch J. Duncan and Leona Alley Duncan. He was a retired Steel Smelter for Burkley Machine Works. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Wurzburger Duncan; one daughter, Ruby W. Duncan, Christiansburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Gwenda Dobbins Duncan, Richmond; two brothers, Edgar Duncan, Riner, and Marlie Duncan, Upperco, Md.; two sisters, Esther Griffith, Christiansburg, and Margie Delaney, Alum Ridge. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 27, at 3 p.m. from the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with Kenneth Wurzburger officiating. FRANKLIN, Raymond Gordon, 51, of Richmond, passed away at his home Friday, February 24, 1995, after a lengthy illness. Born in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Gordon L. and Maude Williams Franklin. He leaves to cherish his memory, one sister, Margaret Crouch of Moneta; one brother, Edward Dillon of San Augustine, Texas; one niece, Cheryl; and four nephews, Layne, Wayne, Roger Lee and Michael; a devoted pet, Kristi; other relatives and friends. Among them, three devoted friends, Juanita Wolfe, Keith Pinney and Don Rohm, his home care giver and special friend. His remains rest at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, Richmond, where the family will receive friends from 6 to p.m. Sunday and services will be held at 8 p.m. His remains will rest at Oakey's North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, from 6 to p.m. Monday, where services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday. HALLER, John Oewel, 92, of Wytheville, passed away Friday, February 24, 1995 at Birdmont Nursing Home. He was born in Wytheville, February 11, 1903, the son of the late Jacob Victor Haller and Clara Oewel Haller. He was a retired dentist, having practiced dentistry in his home town for over 50 years. He was a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. He was a life member of the Southwest Virginia Dental Society and the American Dental Association. He was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher, Deacon and Trustee and was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Kent Lawson Haller. He is survived by two sisters, Miss H. Hardess Haller of Wytheville and Mrs. Sally Haller Prillaman of Bradenton, Fla.; two nieces and three nephews. Graveside services and interment will be held Monday, February 276, 1995, at 11 a.m. in the East End Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home Monday from 10 a.m until service time. The family suggests that those how prefer may make memorials to the charity of their choice. HAND, Robert Stanley, (``Bob""), 65, of 2108 Sharon Rd., Ashland, Ky., died Friday, February 24, 1995 at his residence. He was born March 9, 1929 in Ashland, Ky., the son of the late Walter Eugene and Pauline Phillips Hand. He was retired from East Processing Maintenance Department Armco Steel Inc., with 41 years service. He was a member of the Old Orchard Church of Christ, member of United Steel Workers Union Local 1865, active in the Boy Scouts of America and served as Scout Master for eight years for Troop 108. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, and an Army veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his wife, June Bruce Hand; two sons, Rob Hand and Larry Woodrum, both of Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Jean Kuzinkoski, Detroit, Mich.; on e brother, Donald R. Hand, Satellite Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Rose Hill Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Tony Amerine. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. HARKRADER, Ada Chafin, 85, of Christiansburg, died early Saturday, February 25, 1995 in the Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born October 18, 1909 in the Laurel Ridge section of Montgomery County and was the widow of B. Peery Harkrader Sr. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she served in Circle #5. She was also a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Dept. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Sam Harkrader, Peery and Judith Harkrader, all of Christiansburg; two sisters, Merlie Duncan, Riner, Ezma Martin, Christiansburg; two grandchildren, Cath erine Brown Harkrader, Christiansburg, Julia H. Rose, Pearisburg; two great grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Rose and Erin Michelle Rose. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday from St. Paul United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Douglas Kanney with burial in Sunset Cemetery. HARVEY, Hallie Mitchell, 87, of Valley View, 1213 Long Meadow Dr., Lynchburg, died Friday, February 24, 1995 in the Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the widow of William C. Harvey Jr. Born in Huddleston, she was the daughter of the late Morton Alexander Mitchell and Elmur Carter Mitchell. She was a former employee of C & P Telephone Co. and was a member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the Fort Hill Womans Club, Telephone Pioneers of America, Westview Garden Club and the Y Friendly Club. She is survived by one son, William M. Harvey, Huntington, W.Va.; a da ugher, Mrs. Malcolm D. (Betty Ann) Thompson, Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Lynn T. Mitchell, Richmond, Donald S. Harvey, Huntington, W. Va. and William G. (Greg) Harvey, Richmond; two great-grandsons, Dustin T. Mitchell, Derek S. Mitchell, both of Richmond. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday in Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. HAWKINS, MSGT, Ret. William F., 71, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, February 25, 1995. Surviving is his wife, Jerry Hawkins; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sheri Hawkins, and their daughter, Hailey, Blue Ridge; daughter and son-in-law, Patty and V. J. HAYES, Albert A., 94, of Roanoke, passed away Friday evening, February 24, 1995 in a Salem hospital, after a lingering illness. He was retired in 1970 from the Norfolk & Western Railway with over 50 years of service. Mr. Hayes was a past Chancellor Commander of the Osceola Knights of Pythias and a substitute teacher in the Roanoke Public Schools. He was a longtime member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Bagby Hayes; and five children, Sarah Hayes, Dallas, Texas, Jean Repass, Roanoke, Rose Lucado, North Wales, Penn., Allen Hayes, Raleigh, N.C., John Hayes, Roanoke; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. HEINECK, Leslie Virginia Barnett Dyer, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, February 25, 1995. She was the widow of Marion ``Mac"" Dyer and Frederick G. Heineck. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and the Thursday Morning Music Club. Surviving are cousins, Ann Orr, Catawba, Mary Ann Selender, Roanoke; niece, Irene E. Engel, Avon, Conn.; great-nephew, David J. Engel, Bristol, Conn.; special friends, Nancy Perdue and Lou Ann Hatcher, both of Roanoke; god daughters, Linda Perdue and Holly Updike. HOLLAND, Virginia M., 92, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, February 25, 1995. She was the widow of Divers Reginald ``Doc"" Holland. Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Elizabeth H. McCARTER, Harvey Wilson, 82, of Salem, died Thursday, February 23, 1995, in a Salem hospital. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Louise McCarter. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Louise Brookman McCarter; two sons, Tommy Carter, Salem, Ronald McCarter, Sevierville, Tenn; three daughters, Vicki Guiliani, Hope McCarter, both of Salem, Shirley Ann Ragan, Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Nancy King, Maryville, Tenn., Mary Walker, Alcoa, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Morris was a longtime member of Belmont Baptist Church and was preceded in death by three of her children, Helen Morris, George Tillman Morris and Clyde E. Morris. She was the widow of James Howard Morris and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Grace Juanita and Vernon R. Minnix, Palmyra, Penn.; her son and daughter-in-law, Fred H. and Dorothy B. Morris, Salem; her daughters-in-law, Gloria Mae Morris, June B. Morris, both of Salem; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren. SMITH, Evelyn, (``A""), of Long Island, N.Y., passed away Thursday, February 16, 1995. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Everett J. I and Debra Delaney Smith, Roanoke; five grandsons, Everett J. II and wife, Chunchui Smith, Pinto, Texas, Brain W. and wife, Lynelle Smith, Sherrond T. Wiley, Cepada Wiley, all of Roanoke, Dedric L. Wiley, Richmond; four great-grandchildren, Everett J. Smith III, Eric Smith, Justice Smith and Schana Gonvalus. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with Elder Arnold Jones officiating. Burial will be in Williams Memorial Park. SPINNER, Hester Virginia of Bedford, died Friday, February 24, 1995 in Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. She is survived by four children; two brothers; nine grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service Tuesday, February 28, 1995, at 2 p.m. in the Otterville Baptist Church, Bedford Co. Interment will follow in Reed Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. STEVENS, Herbert Glenn, 46, of Roanoke, died Friday,February 24, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Senter Stevens; children, Daniel Stevens, Elisabeth Stevens, Vaughan Stevens; sister and brother-in-law, June S. and James B. Blackstock; nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Bettie Jenkins Senter. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 27, 1995, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Charles Fuller officiating. She was the widow of Russell Edward (John) Thomas, and a great-niece of Charlotte Lottie Moon, Baptist Missionary to China. Surviving are three daughters, Charlotte T. Churchill, Atlanta, Ga., Carolyn T. Perry, Roanoke, Virginia T. Fizer, Pulaski; two brothers, E. Richard Andrews, Farmville, Judge Charles B. Andrews, Pembroke; seven grandchildren, Robert Carr Churchill IV, Charles Samuel Churchill II, Mary Barclay Churchill, Russell Edward Thomas Churchill, Charlotte-Elizabeth Andrews Perry, John Redding Perry, Richard Graham Fizer III. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m. Monday, by the Rev. J. Landon Maddex. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.
