SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

Most of us would rather see government smaller, and provide fewer services.

What's your preferred size of government?

Smaller government, with fewer services: 54%

Larger government, with more services: 36%

Unsure: 10%

Who wants to see government which size?

Men are much more eager than women to see the size of government whacked down.

GENDER

Most whites want to see government smaller; most blacks don't.

RACE

Generation Xers are the only age group that would rather see government bigger. Generally, enthusiasim for smaller government rises with age.

AGE

The more education we have, the smaller we want government to be. But once we've been to grad school, our enthusiasm for bigger government is rekindled - slightly.

EDUCATION

The more money we make, the more eager we are to see government do less for us.

INCOME

Almost half of Democrats want to see bigger government, but 7 of 10 Republicans want to see it smaller. Guess that's why we have elections, huh? If it's up to the independents, though, they'll side with Republicans on the size-of-government question.

PARTY AFFILIATION
