Host families needed

BLACKSBURG - Maggie Roston, local director of EF Educational Homestay Programs, seeks host families in the New River and Roanoke valleys willing to accommodate one of 33 French students visiting the region July 2-22.

Host families may select a student from the group ranging in age from 13 to 20 who most closely matches the family's interests and hobbies. The students are fully insured and bring their own spending money.

For more information, call Roston, 552-5146.

Photo ID your kids

CHRISTIANSBURG - Parents can get a photo identification taken of their children at the New River Valley Mall April 1.

One in seven missing children are found because of photos distributed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The center and the Polaroid Corporation developed KidCare Photo ID to provide security for children.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $1. For more information, call 381-0004.

Family fund-raiser

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Community Shelter is launching a fund-raising campaign that will give area residents the chance to help other residents who have fallen on hard times.

The shelter's Families Helping Families is an effort to find a support group of people who will donate $10 a month for a year. The shelter has undergone considerable growth since it was founded in 1987, and the number of people who contact it for help also has grown.

In 1993, 390 people sought shelter in the New River Valley. In 1994, that number increased 21 percent to 478. During the same period, local donations dropped 15 percent.

For more information, write to the shelter at P.O. Box 2308, Christiansburg 24068.
