ALTIZER SNAPS POWERLIFTING RECORDS

Bettina Altizer, a 32-year-old woman from Roanoke, broke four national records at the American Lifetime Drug-Free Powerlifting National Championships held Saturday in Wilkes-Barre, Penn.

Altizer, who weighs just 129 pounds, lifted 440 pounds in the squat to better the record by 11 pounds. She bench pressed 248 pounds, six pounds better than the record of 242, and her 418 pounds in the dead lift broke the record of 402 by 16 pounds. Her total came to 1,106 pounds which smashed the previous record of 1,063. Altizer is a four-time drug-free powerlifting champion.

In Gettysburg, Pa., second-ranked Gettysburg handed seventh-ranked Washington and Lee its first loss of the Division III men's lacrosse season, holding off the Generals 17-13.

W&L (5-1) fell behind 9-5 early in the second half, then closed to 10-8. But the Bullets (3-0) scored the next four goals to put away the game.

Ed Curry led Gettysburg with five goals - four in the second half - and two assists. Scott Mackley had three goals and one assist for the Generals.

Ohio Wesleyan's Vince McGeehan scored on an assist from Darren McGum with 2:09 left in overtime to lift the Battling Bishops to a 15-14 victory over Roanoke in a battle of Division III top 10 men's lacrosse teams.

The Maroons (3-2) trailed by eight goals, 13-5, with 13:40 remaining before tying the game on a goal by Billy Metz with eight seconds left in regulation. The Maroons were led by J.J. Blatt, who had four goals and three assists, and Keith Wempe added four goals.

The Battling Bishops (4-0) got four goals and two assists from McGeehan and three goals from Tim Kaiser.

Francine Brennan had two goals and two assists as Johns Hopkins defeated Roanoke 7-5 in a women's lacrosse game in Baltimore. Brennan had a goal and an assist in the last nine minutes to give fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins (3-0) the win. Ali Oglesby had two goals for the fifth-ranked Maroons (1-1).

Lindsay Coleman had five goals and an assist to lead the Washington and Lee past Guilford 14-5 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game in Greensboro, N.C.

Nicole Ripken added four goals for the Generals (4-1, 3-1).

The Radford Highlanders rallied from an early six-run deficit to win the first game 11-8 and went on to a 6-2 victory in the second game for a sweep of their college baseball doubleheader with C.W. Post in Radford on Saturday.

Rob McCandless and Chris Carr each drove in two runs in a four-run fourth inning to spark Radford (8-11) in the first game. In the second game, Jason Anderson, a freshman from Glenvar High School, shut down the Pioneers on four hits and one earned run. Anderson struck out 11.

Franklin County High School alumnus Riley Hodges lined an RBI double in the 10th inning to give Ferrum a 6-5 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan in the Dixie Conference baseball opener for both teams.

Keith Mayhew (5-0) picked up the victory for the Panthers (11-3). Ferrum's Chad France drove in John Poindexter with two out in the ninth inning to tie the score at 5. N.C. Wesleyan is 11-6.

Louie Napoleon had two hits and three RBI to lead VMI to split of a Southern Conference doubleheader with Marshall in Huntington, W.Va.

The Keydets lost the first game 7-3 as Marshall starter Brandon Mohr went the distance, striking out nine and giving up just five hits.

VMI bounced back in the second game to win 7-6 after scoring four runs in the fifth inning to take control.

Matt Ermigiotti went all seven innings to help Washington and Lee win the second game of an ODAC doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan in Lexington.

The Generals (4-9-1, 2-3-1), after losing the first game 4-3, jumped out to a 6-1 lead after five innings and never looked back in winning the nightcap 8-4. Ermigiotti allowed five hits and struck out seven to pick up his second victory on the season. Graig Fantuzzi had four hits and scored three runs for the Generals on the day.

In New Bern, N.C., temperatures plummeted 30 degrees and high winds forced scores upward in the ECU-Sheraton Emerald Intercollegiate golf tournament. First-round leader VCU fired a 300 for a 586 total to lead the field. Virginia Tech and Richmond are tied for second at 601.

First-round leader Marten Vandenberg of Miami of Ohio shot a 75 for a two-day 144 and a one-shot lead after two rounds. No player shot par on Saturday in the 19-team field.

Virginia Tech was led by David Havens, who shot a 75. Other Hokies were Curtis Deal (77), Sean Farrell (79), and Brian Sharp (80).

The final round is today.

In Fresno, Calif., 14th-ranked Nevada defeated Virginia Tech 12-9 as the Hokies finished fourth in the Pepsi-Johnny Quick Classic baseball tournament.

Tech (7-6) led 2-1 after a two-run homer by designated hitter Mike Terhune in the first inning, An error by the Hokies, however, opened the door for three unearned Nevada runs and the Wolfpack (10-5) never trailed again.

Rod Preston (0-4) took the loss for the Hokies. Offensively, Bryan King had three hits for Tech and David Fitt had two hits and three RBI.

Late Friday night, Brian Fitzgerald pitched a five-hit shutout to lead Virginia Tech past 16th-ranked Fresno State 8-0.

Fitzgerald (3-1) struck out two, walked one and chalked up 23 outs on ground balls.

Kevin Barker had two hits and two RBI to lead the offense for the Hokies. Fresno State is 18-9.

Williams College track teams dominated the Washington and Lee Invitational, winning the team competion in both the men's and women's categories.

The men's team accumulated 166 points, easily outdistancing second-place Thiel, which had 70 points. Brent Wilson of Williams was named men's athlete of the meet after winning the 100- and 200-meter runs. The women's team had 141.5 points to finish ahead of John Carroll with 63 points. Nancy Byrne was the women's athlete of the meet after winning the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs.

Host Washington and Lee came in fourth in the women's competition, with Sarah Gilbert winning the high jump, Josephine Schaeffer coming in second in the 10,000-meter run and Susan Deutsch coming in second in the 1,500-meter run. The men's team was 10th in the team competition. Harris Morrison finished second in the pole vault to pace the Generals.

Roanoke College's men's team, which finished tied for seventh with 22 points, was led by Courtney Fitch, who won the high jump and finished second in the long jump. The women's team came in 10th.

Detra Edmunds won the long jump and placed third in the high jump as the Virginia Tech women's track team competed in the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Edmunds won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 3 3/4 inches, which was nearly eight inches beyond her closest competitor. Meredith Newby took second-place in the hammer throw with a heave of 145 feet, 7 inches. There were no team scores kept.
