LIBRARY SEEKS OLD NEWSPAPERS

The staff of the Virginia Newspaper Project at the Library of Virginia are seeking help in finding issues of 41 African-American newspapers once published in the state.

The goal of the project, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, is to catalog and preserve all newspapers published in Virginia dating to the 17th century.

Among those being sought are issues of the Press newspaper, published in Roanoke between 1891 and 1897. The newspaper was edited by John H. Davis.

Anyone who has entire issues, not clippings, of these newspapers should contact Errol Somay of the Virginia Newspaper Project at (804) 786-8041. His address is the Library of Virginia, 11th Street at Capitol Square, Richmond 23219.
