49ERS SLAP HOKIES 9-3 IN BASEBALL

UNC Charlotte righthander Tim Collie pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out four as the 49ers defeated Virginia Tech 9-3 in the Metro Conference baseball opener for both schools in Blacksburg on Friday.

The 49ers (15-8 overall, 1-0 Metro) took a 1-0 lead on Chris Junghan's RBI single in the second inning and then took a 3-0 lead in the third inning after Joey Anderson scored on Jimmy Anderson's single. The 49ers built up a 7-0 lead and never looked back.

Virginia Tech (11-7, 1-0) got on the board in the seventh inning when John Mader scored on Corey Snyder's triple and then added two runs in the eighth.

In other sports in the region:

VMI used a six-run fourth inning to defeat NCAA Division II West Chester (Pa.) 13-5 in a baseball game at Patchin Field in Lexington.

Dale Moore and Nate Shepperson each went 3-of-5, including Shepperson's first home run of the season for the Keydets (9-14).

Chris Frey (0-1) took the loss for West Chester (2-5). The teams play a doubleheader today at 1 p.m.

The Virginia golf team is in second place after one round of the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.

The Cavaliers are at 294, three strokes behind UNC Charlotte. The 49ers were paced by Scott Newton, who shared the individual lead with Richard Johnson of Augusta at 2-under-par 70.

Ohio State is in third place at 296, and Virginia Tech and Old Dominion are tied for fourth at 297.

Strong winds kept scores high at the par-72 Furman University Golf Course and only eight individuals broke par. David Havens and Curtis Deal of Virginia Tech opened with 72s. Brian Sharp shot a 74 and Robbie Rasmussen had a 79 for the Hokies.

Adam Gillespie shot a 74 and Berk Jolly posted a 75 to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 12-stroke victory in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational held at the Landing View Country Club in Farmville.

The Tigers finished at 303 to easily outdistance Lynchburg at 315. Washington and Lee finished in fourth place with 329 and was led by sophomore Tommy Dudley, who fired a 79. Roanoke finished sixth at 349.

Former Blacksburg High standout Katie Ollendick finished second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 73/4 inches to lead the Virginia Tech women's track team as both the men and the women competed in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.

Erin Graham finished 14th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.44, and Detra Edmunds long-jumped 17 feet, 10 inches to place ninth. Edmunds also came in 10th in the 400-meter dash.

Jason Fullmer won a heat in the 100 meters in a time of 14.80 seconds, but his time was not good enough to qualify for the final. His time of 55.71 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles was good enough for 13th place. Geoff Tonini came in seventh in the 400 hurdles, winning his heat in 54.94 seconds.

In Harrisonburg, Ferrum swept three games in the Eastern Mennonite College Invitational softball tournament. Roben Sutphin picked up pitching victories in all three games as the Panthers (9-5) beat Eastern Mennonite 21-8, Roanoke College 8-1 and Hartwick 12-3. Lisa Pendleton had four hits and six RBI for Ferrum.
