AREND ELECTED COUNCIL CHAIRMAN

JAMES W. AREND, senior vice president of Atlantic Mutual Cos., has been elected chairman of the Roanoke Valley Business Council for a two-year term. He succeeds THOMAS L. ROBERTSON, president of Carilion Health System.

F. EDWARD HARRIS, Western Region president of Crestar Bank, was elected vice chairman.

New directors are JAMES M. TURNER JR., chief executive officer of J.M. Turner & Co. Inc.; REGINE N. ARCHER, owner of Blue Ridge Beverage Co. Inc.; and DAVID M. GRING, president of Roanoke College.

The council is composed of the chief executive officers of the 50 largest employers in the Roanoke Valley.

BANKING

LIN WILLOUGHBY has joined NBC Bank in the private banking division as an assistant vice president. She comes to NBC from Crestar Mortgage Corp. In her new position, Willoughby will be responsible for mortgage loan origination.

COLLEGES

CHARLES M. QUILLIN, visiting professor and chairman of Duke University's aerospace studies department, has been named dean of institutional advancement at Emory & Henry College. He will begin his new job covering development, alumni affairs and public relations in August.

Also at Emory & Henry, MARY-MARGARET JUSTIS has been promoted from director of development to executive director of the development office, effective in July. She came to E&H in 1984 as director of annual giving after five years in Duke's office of annual giving.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

MARK DiCARLO has been named president of Atlantic Coast Capital Inc., a Roanoke-based corporation specializing in mortgage financing. DiCarlo previously was the Southern region account executive with Chase Manhattan Mortgage Corp.'s Atlanta office. Before that, he was Southern divisional credit/sales manager with Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies in Roanoke.

LAW

JOHN W. ACREE has joined the law firm of Jolly, Place, Fralin & Prillaman P.C. as an associate. He primarily will practice criminal, bankruptcy and personal injury law.

ORGANIZATIONS

The Pharmaceutical Sales Association of the Roanoke Valley has elected officers for 1995: JIM HEIM, Marion-Merrell Dow, president; MICHAEL R. WHELAN, Mead Johnson Nutritionals, vice president; and SUSAN BINGAMAN, Miles Inc., secretary-treasurer.

The Smith Mountain Lake Policy Advisory Board has elected officers for 1995: JAMES L. BROWN, retired U.S. Army colonel, chairman; LIONEL L. REYNOLDS, auctioneer and member of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors, vice chairman; and MICHAEL T. PAGANS, Realtor and appraiser with Coldwell-Banker Countryside, secretary-treasurer.

NONPROFITS

LISA DOWNIE of WSET (Channel 13) has been named president of First Fridays at Five for the 1995 season. Former leaders BARRY SIMMERMAN of Central Fidelity National Bank and RICHARD BEARD of the Roanoke Valley Economic Development Partnership have been named chairman and past-president, respectively. Other officers are LARRY PETERSON, Breakell Inc., first vice president, charities; TOM McCLUNG, McClung Lumber Co., second vice president, logistics; MARY BETH SAUNDERS, treasurer; and CINDY JOURNELL, Atlantic Mutual Cos., secretary.

SIGMUND DAVIDSON has been presented the 1995 Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser Award by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives at its international conference in Chicago. He was cited for contributions to philanthropy. Davidson is chairman of Joseph Davidson Inc., Roanoke operator of the Davidsons and Davidsons Outdoors menswear stores.

REAL ESTATE

VICTOR H. BRADLEY has recently joined Roanoke-based F&W Management as director of business development. In the newly created position, he will be responsible for seeking multifamily and commercial property management business for the company throughout Virginia and North Carolina. He comes to F&W Management from Moore's Lumber, where he worked as an account officer in commercial banking and in credit/sales management.

PAT BAILEY and HARRIS FERGUSON have been elected directors and officers of Coldwell-Banker Countryside Realtors in Moneta. Bailey joined the firm in 1990 and is responsible for operating the rental and property management division. She has been in the real estate business since 1984 in both residential and commercial areas and is an associate broker.

Ferguson, an associate broker with the company since 1987, has specialized in land sales and commercial property.

RETAIL

MARK BELCHER has become associated with Frank L. Moose Jewelers in Roanoke. He has 20 years of retail experience in the downtown Roanoke area.

TRANSPORTATION

LINDA M. VANDE VEN has been appointed assistant vice president for planning and development of Norfolk Southern Corp.'s information technology department. Based in Roanoke, she supervises employees here and in Atlanta. She joined Norfolk Southern in February after having worked in computer systems and applications for Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. in Akron, Ohio, and Chicago; United Stationers in Des Plaines, Ill.; and Eckerd Corp. in Largo, Fla.
