`ODYSSEY' WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Create a problem and they will solve it - with creativity.

Winners of the Roanoke Regional Odyssey of the Mind competition Saturday at Northside middle and high schools walked away with more than trophies. The students left knowing that they alone, without the help of adults, had taken a problem and solved it using teamwork and ingenuity.

Students in seven-member teams from area schools worked several months on their chosen problem.

First-place winners will compete at the state contest April 29 in Norfolk's Old Dominion University.

This year's problems included development of a vaudeville show, building a weight-bearing structure and construction of a ``safari'' vehicle. Teams also solved unannounced problems.

The winners, divisions and categories are: ``Scientific Safari,'' division one, Breckinridge Elementary School, team A, first; Colonial Elementary School, second; W.E. Cundiff Elementary School, team A, third; division two, Community School, first; Cave Spring Junior High School, team A, second; Botetourt Intermediate School, third; division three, Cave Spring High School, team A, first; Lord Botetourt School, second; and Northside Middle School, third.

``The Mail Must Go Through,'' division two, Glenvar High School, first; Cave Spring Junior High School, team A, second; and division three, Lord Botetourt High School, first.

``Upbeat Vaudeville,'' division one, Glen Cove Elementary School, first; Cloverdale Elementary School, second; Troutville Elementary School, third; division two, Community School, first; Cave Spring Junior High School, team A, second; Breckinridge Middle School, third; and division three, Cave Spring High School, team A, Cave Spring Junior High School, team A, second; Roanoke Catholic Upper and Lower School, third.

``A New Twist,'' division one, Garden City Elementary School, first; Penn Forest Elementary School, team B, second; Penn Forest Elementary School, team A, third; and division two, Stonewall Jackson Middle School, first; Cave Spring Junior High School, team B, second; Cave Spring Junior High, team A, third.

``Time Traveler,'' division one, section A, Raleigh Court Elementary School, first; Oak Grove Elementary School, team B, second; Penn Forest Elementary School, third; division one, section B, Breckinridge Elementary School, team B, first; Breckinridge Elementary School, team A, second; Roanoke Catholic Upper and Lower School, third; and division two, Hidden Valley Junior High School, first; Glenvar Elementary School, second; William Byrd Middle School, third.

Teams or individuals who exhibited exceptional creativity earned the Renatra Fusca Creativity Award and are as follows: Cave Spring High School, ``Vaudeville,'' division three; Cave Spring High School, spontaneous, division three; Community School, ``Scientific Safari,'' division two; Community School, spontaneous, division two; Community School, ``Vaudeville,'' division two; Roanoke Catholic Upper and Lower School, ``Vaudeville,'' division three; Hidden Valley Junior High School, ``Time Traveler,'' division two; Lord Botetourt High School, spontaneous, ``Scientific Safari,'' division three; and Stonewall Jackson Middle School, spontaneous, division two.

OMer awards are given to individuals and teams that distinguish themselves in the heat of competition, perhaps by overcoming an unforeseen obstacle, or by showing exceptional teamwork. The winners of this award were: Addison Aerospace School, ``Time Traveler," division two; Cave Spring Junior High School, team B, ``Time Traveler,'' division two; Salem Prog. B School, ``Vaudeville,'' division one; Fairview Magnet School, ``Time Traveler,'' division one; Raleigh Court Elementary School, ``Time Traveler,'' division one; Bent Mountain Elementary School, spontaneous, division one; Amy Chandler, Herman L. Horn School, spontaneous, division one; and Andrew Carr, Glenvar Elementary, spontaneous, division one.

A contest also was held for artwork later put on T-shirts, caps and buttons sold at the competition. Brian Hungate won first place for his art; Chad Ricker was second and Michael Reddicks and Amy Martin tied for third.
