FRANKLIN'S SUPERINTENDENT HONORED

Franklin County School Superintendent Len Gereau is the Region VI Superintendent of the Year for 1995-96.

He will compete with superintendent winners from the state's other seven regions for Superintendent of the Year, an award to be announced this spring.

Dennis Witt, Patrick County's school chief and chairman of the Region VI superintendents' group, said Gereau "has proven to be a person with vision and one who is not afraid to think creatively about how to make the connection between education of young people and the real world of work and independent living."

Over the past several months, Gereau has begun work on a curriculum for a new $6 million technology center to serve eighth- and ninth-graders in Franklin County.

The school, as Gereau sees it, will offer laboratories for high-tech subjects such as robotics, as well as advanced training in other job fields such as health care.

The idea behind the school is to push students into career paths earlier in their development.

Gereau has been Franklin County's superintendent since 1984.

The Region VI school divisions include the counties of Alleghany Highlands, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pittsylvania and Roanoke and the cities of Covington, Danville, Martinsville, Roanoke and Salem.
