VMI'S SPRING FOOTBALL GAME SLATED TODAY

VMI will wrap up spring football drills with its annual Red-White game today at 2 p.m. at Alumni Memorial Field in Lexington.

The game is the second under VMI coach Bill Stewart and will consist of four 12-minute quarters.

Stewart welcomes back 17 starters from last year's team, which went 1-10. The Keydets' only victory came in their season finale when they beat 10th-ranked Appalachian State 26-23 in overtime.

Among those returning is junior tailback Thomas Haskins, who rushed for a school-record 1,509 yards last year and ranked fourth in NCAA Division I-AA. Also back for his senior season is wide receiver Tim Williams of Bath County.

Air Force used a fourth-quarter scoring spree to defeat VMI 19-12 in a lacrosse game Friday in Lexington.

Air Force led 11-6 after two periods, but the Keydets went on a 5-2 run in the third quarter to close to 13-11. The Falcons (5-2) then scored six goals in the fourth to earn the victory.

VMI (4-2) was led by Rob Worrell with three goals and four assists. Joe Brockman added three goals and John Ripley had two goals and an assist for the Keydets. Air Force got four goals each from Chris MacAulay and Brian Laidlaw.

Virginia junior forward Wendy Palmer was named Friday to the Kodak All-America women's basketball team.

Palmer led the Cavaliers in scoring with 17.6 points per game and rebounding (10.5 rpg) and was the ACC's player of the year.

Joining Palmer on the Kodak team were Angela Aycock of Kansas, Niesa Johnson of Alabama, Vickie Johnson of Louisiana Tech, Rebecca Lobo and Jen Rizzotti of Connecticut, Stacey Lovelace of Purdue, Nikki McCray of Tennessee, Shelley Sheetz of Colorado and Charlotte Smith of North Carolina.

Radford University's Christie Epperly was one of seven gymnasts who received an at-large bid to the NCAA Southeast Regionals.

Epperly, a graduate of Cave Spring High School, will compete with approximately 70 other gymnasts April 8 at Towson State. It is her third straight regional appearance. Epperly placed 19th overall at last year's regional.

Virginia Tech lost its third straight one-run baseball game Friday, falling to Western Carolina 7-6 in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (14-10) cut a two-run deficit to 7-6 in the seventh inning on Kevin Kurilla's home run. Mike Terhune and Corey Snyder each had two hits and a pair of runs batted in for Tech. Ron Preston (1-5) took the loss.
