VIRGINIA STARS, COACHES HONORED

James Madison basketball coach Lefty Driesell, former Old Dominion basketball standout Dave Twardzik, Olympic canoeist Frank Havens and former William and Mary basketball star Bill Chambers have been chosen for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

The four will be inducted during the Hall's annual awards dinner on May 5.

Havens, a native of Arlington, won the gold medal in the 10,000-meter single-blade canoeing competition in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. He also competed in the `48 games in London, the '56 games in Melbourne, Australia, and the '60 games in Rome, winning silver and bronze medals.

Driesell, a native of Norfolk, ranks 12th on the all-time list for most victories after 33 years of coaching at Davidson, Maryland and JMU. His record of 657-302 places him sixth among active Division I coaches

Twardzik played for the Monarchs in the early 1970s, when ODU was first making its name in basketball. He scored 1,660 points and recorded 880 assists during his career. He led the 1970-71 team to runner-up honors in the NCAA Division II championships.

Twardzik played four seasons with the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association. He joined the Portland Trail Blazers in 1977 and averaged 10.3 points and 3.3 assists in the team's march to the NBA title.

Chambers, whose 51 rebounds against Virginia in 1953 is still an NCAA record, also scored 1,465 points for a career average of 18 a game.
