AAUW honors 3

BLACKSBURG - Three women have been honored by the Blacksburg branch of the American Association of University Women with named grants to the Educational Foundation Program. The three - Polly Cobb, Lucy Lee Lancaster and Polly Hale - were active members of AAUW and the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities.

The grants were announced at the annual AAUW luncheon in March. The EFP provides funds to advance education and research, foster equity and self-development for women and support change in society. A total of $1,565 was contributed to the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund of the Foundation for 1995-96.

Cobb, who died in 1989, joined the Blacksburg Branch of AAUW in 1969 and was president, EFP chairwoman, program vice president and legislative chairwoman. She was president and secretary of the Regional Art Association.

Cobb was particularly interested in furthering understanding between people in the United States and Russia. She taught Russian at Virginia Tech, reviewed books on Soviet topics and was an interpreter for visitors. Her husband, Whitfield, lives in Blacksburg.

Lancaster was an active member of AAUW for more than 50 years, holding various offices, including the presidency, throughout the years. She was a graduate of Virginia Tech and, as a longtime member of the library faculty, she was honored with the university's Ruffner medal. She was a member of several art, music, education, history and public service organizations in the community. Lancaster left her house on Washington Street in Blacksburg to the YMCA for its offices. She died in 1989.

Hale was a retired professor at Virginia Tech, where she taught Russian and was considered an expert on the Soviet Union. She was an active member of AAUW and a regular contributor to its literature group and EFP. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and many professional organizations. She died in 1994. Her husband, Maynard, lives in Blacksburg.
