MONTGOMERY OKS LIBRARY BRANCH WORK

The renovation and expansion of the Blacksburg library branch will begin this spring, after a vote Monday by the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.

That's big news for library boosters, who have pushed for the expansion since the late 1980s.

The board voted 7-0 to award a $1.98 million construction contract to a Roanoke company, Martin Bros. Contractors Inc.

The supervisors also accepted recommendations from the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Board of Trustees on several ways to pay for a shortfall between the low bid and the $1.73 million construction budget included in a bond package approved by county voters 18 months ago.

Key among those proposals is using $100,000 in interest expected to accumulate on the general obligation bonds, which the county sold in November. The other components of the plan include a $125,000 contribution from Blacksburg and $67,100 the Library Board has pledged to accumulate through a fund-raising drive.
