NEW RIVER PEOPLE

Chris Donald of Blacksburg recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a junior at Blacksburg High School and is the son of Wayne and Darla Donald.

For his Eagle service project, Donald, a member of Boy Scout Troop 704, constructed facilities for a camping program at Camp Alto Mons, a United Methodist Church camp near Shawsville.

Virginia Tech's Friends of the University Libraries conducted a recent reception for Blacksburg artist and former Professor Preston Frazer, who taught at the university for 35 years. An exhibition of his work is on display now in the library's special collections department.

Frazer is noted for his line drawings. His art has been displayed throughout the United States.

Hugh Campbell, a retired mathematics professor at Virginia Tech, has been elected director of Smithfield Plantation by the Montgomery Chapter of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Gibson Worsham of Christiansburg and Dianna Pickering of Radford were elected new members of the governing board.

Nine area artists have been selected to participate in "From These Hills: Contemporary Art in the Southern Appalachian Highlands," a juried competition at the William King Regional Arts Center in Abingdon. The competition will run from May 20 to July 16. The artists are: Charlie Brouwer of Radford, David Crane of Blacksburg, Anna Fariello of Radford, and Robert Henry Graham of Blacksburg.

Also included are Ray Kass of Christiansburg, James Knipe of Radford, Janet Niewald of Blacksburg, Joni Pienkowski of Blacksburg, and Pat West of Pembroke.

Newport artist Robert Tuckwiller recently participated in an exhibition in Arlington of arts and crafts from around the world. Tuckwiller is noted for his realistic landscapes.

Jim Higham was the best driver in Blacksburg Transit's annual recent bus rodeo. He will represent Blacksburg Transit in the International Bus Roadeo in San Antonio, Texas, in October.

The top three finishers in the 35-foot bus competition were Mike Dunn, Patrick Bird, and Pierce Felch. Higham was first in the 40-foot bus competition, followed by Keath Marx and Gene Morris. The top two finishers in each category will represent Blacksburg Transit at the state competition in Blacksburg July 30.

The New River Valley Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers has recognized Kathy Decker, dropout prevention coordinator for Montgomery County public schools, as Social Worker of the Year. She has been a social worker for the school system for nine years and has been instrumental in developing school and community programs for at-risk students and their families.

Dawn Rice, the New River Valley coordinator of the Volunteer Emergency Families for Children, was chosen Public Citizen of the Year. She has been a promoter of foster parenting, and she and her husband have been foster parents for years.

Judith Araman, a teacher in Montgomery County, was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International at its April meeting.

James Lee Chapman Jr. of Christiansburg has been selected to receive a Citizen of the Year Award by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Criteria for selection include being active in gun rights issues, by writing letters to the editor, contacting elected officials or appearing for public testimony.

Four Blacksburg residents have been elected to the board of directors of the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council. Jan Chance was re-elected, and Kevin Dankar was selected to serve a two-year term as member-at-large. John Newcomb was elected for a two-year term on the council nominating committee, and Elisabeth Newcomb was re-elected to a one-year term as senior Girl Scout member.

Jan Notter or Blacksburg has been designated a Girl Scout instructor-of-training. She will train volunteers, who will in turn train Girl Scout Leaders.

Lynne Mitchell of Christiansburg has completed a course on diamonds with the Gemological Institute of America, based in Santa Monica, Calif. She was asked to learn a range of information, from the creation of diamonds to world diamond markets to selling techniques.
