WOMAN'S BODY FOUND AFTER FIRE

The body of a woman, whose identity police have not released, was discovered in a house at 369 Washington Ave. S.W. Saturday morning after a fire that engulfed the front of the structure.

Police said they believe they know the woman's identity, but were not releasing it until relatives were notified.

City firefighters were already on the scene when police arrived shortly after 5 a.m., according to a police report. The body was found on a bed in an upstairs bedroom, police said.

It was taken to a medical examiner's office where an autopsy is to be performed Monday.

The body showed no outward signs of foul play, police said. They were, however, trying to locate two men who were reported to be in a fight near the house earlier Saturday.

City fire investigators were examining the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

The victim apparently was a resident of the house, police said. The owner of the house reportedly was out of the city over the weekend.
