HOKIES GO TO BAT FOR METRO TITLE

A pair of former William Byrd High School standouts provided the spark as Virginia Tech set up a showdown with Southern Mississippi for the Metro Conference regular-season baseball title, beating the Golden Eagles 9-3 on Saturday in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (32-22 overall, 10-7 conference) hold a tie-breaker edge and can win the championship today with a victory over Southern Miss (34-21, 11-6) when the teams meet at 2 p.m. at English Field. If the Golden Eagles win, they will claim the title.

Herman hit a two-run homer to left field and Matt Reynolds followed with a solo blast to center field in the fourth inning to put Tech up 3-1. The Hokies took control with a five-run sixth inning, powered by Reynolds' RBI double and a three-run homer by Corey Snyder, as Sean Hummel (6-2) picked up the victory.

In other baseball:

Radford University also moved to the brink of a regular-season title, sweeping Towson State 2-0 and 5-0 in a Big South Conference doubleheader in Towson, Md.

Former Glenvar High School ace Jason Anderson (5-4) pitched a four-hitter in the opener, striking out eight and walking one. Highlanders ace Jim Abbott (9-2) tossed a two-hitter in the second game.

Radford (30-23, 17-6), which set a school record for victories with the sweep, can claim the title today with a victory over Towson State (23-28, 9-15).

TENNIS Baker, Garcia advance to quarterfinals

Washington and Lee senior Marilyn Baker and freshman Natalia Garcia advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III women's singles championships at Sweet Briar College. The two also teamed up to advance to the quarterfinal round of the doubles tournament.

Baker, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Player of the Year, picked up the 100th victory of her career and a school-record 31st of the season. She defeated Susie Drage of UC-San Diego 6-3, 6-0 in the first round and advanced to the quarterfinals by knocking off Kristin Sherrill of Ohio Wesleyan 6-2, 6-4. Baker, the sixth-ranked singles player in the country, will face Amy Smith of Emory in a quarterfinal today at noon.

Garcia, the 17th-ranked singles player in the country, improved her record to 25-3 by defeating eighth-ranked Alison St. Vincent of Kenyon 6-3, 6-0 in the first round and advanced to a quarterfinal by beating Anabel Flores of Washington College 6-0, 6-0. Garcia will meet Alison Mizou of Claremont Mudd-Scripps.

Baker and Garcia, the third-ranked doubles team in the country, advanced by beating the 11th-ranked duo of Audrey Coates and Becky Lucas of Hope College 6-0, 7-6 (7-1). Baker and Garcia will play at 4 p.m. today

Roanoke Valley Christian won its second consecutive Virginia Independent Conference boys' title 7-2 over the Miller School in Crozet.

The Eagles' Hampton Pasley and Jay Plemmons each won 8-0 over Miller's Chris Otten and Guy Flores, respectively. With the score tied 2-2, Simon Foster of RVC defeated Robert Ferguson 8-5, and Mark Delong downed Shawn Gonzalez 8-5 to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. Roanoke Valley Christian won all three doubles matches to claim the championship.

The Eagles finished the season 10-1 overall and 10-0 in the conference. Pasley, Plemmons, Foster and Delong finished the season with perfect 10-0 records.

ETC. RiverDawgs face league champs

The Roanoke RiverDawgs will take on the Greensboro Dynamo, the two-time champion of the professional division of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues, at 3 p.m. today at Cave Spring Junior High School.

Greensboro is third in the Atlantic Division standings with a 5-4 record. Bob Rosario, a veteran of the prestigious English Premier League, is playing center midfied with the Dynamo while rehabilitating a knee injury.

Roanoke, which competes in the Premier/Amateur Division of the league, is 1-2 and in the middle of the Central Division standings.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students and can be purchased at the gate.

Robert Rude scored the go-ahead goal as North Cross won the Virginia Independent Conference boys' soccer championship, beating Hargrave Military 5-2.

Rude scored off an assist from Parker Moore, and Dominic Basile and Brad Blum anchored a defense that held up the rest of the way as the Raiders (16-5) wrapped up their season. Hargrave finished 5-3-5.

Rain forced the postponement of Saturday night's races at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

The X-Press Markets/Flav-O-Rich 200 will be made up at a later date. The next scheduled race is 3 p.m. May 21, with the Late Model Stock Car feature to be televised live by WDBJ (Channel 7).

In other racing news, Franklin County Speedway's Saturday night races also were rained out.
