SHERIFF'S RACE HIGHLIGHTS GOP MASS MEETING

Montgomery County Republicans will select their nominee for the fall run for sheriff at Saturday's mass meeting.

The three candidates - Roy Bolen, Dan Haga and Doug Marrs - come from similar backgrounds. All served in the military before beginning law enforcement careers and putting down roots in Montgomery County. All have management experience.

Bolen has been a police chief and chief deputy. Haga took over as chief deputy after Bolen was fired by Sheriff Ken Phipps while conflict-of-interest charges were pending against him.

Bolen was cleared of the charges, which revolved around the repair of Sheriff's Office vehicles at a garage he owned.

Marrs, as lieutenant of investigations for the Christiansburg Police Department, also has been involved in policy-making and budget decisions.

All three men speak of how important it is to meet the needs of the people as well as the employees of the Sheriff's Office.

There are key differences, too. The profiles on page 2 tell prospective voters a little more about the candidates' goals, philosophies and private lives.

Saturday's mass meeting begins at 4 p.m. at Christiansburg Middle School. Besides picking a sheriff's candidate, the GOP will choose candidates for treasurer, commissioner of revenue, commonwealth's attorney and at least three Board of Supervisors' seats.

The GOP also is expected to nominate Larry Linkous as its candidate for the 12th Legislative District seat in the House of Delegates, held by Jim Shuler. The 12th District includes most of Montgomery County and the Eastern District of Giles County.
