SALEM USES WRIGHT STUFF TO BEAT KEYS

Jamey Wright had his longest outing of the season, and the Salem Avalanche built a 4-0 lead in cruising to a 6-3 victory over the Frederick Keys on Tuesday night in the Carolina League.

Wright (5-3) went eight innings and gave up only one earned run - a solo homer by the Keys' Clayton Byrne in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wright gave up four hits, walking three and striking out seven.

The Avalanche (21-18) scored four runs in the second inning off Frederick starter Rashad Stewart. Colin Dixon led off the inning with a walk and Brian Culp singled to center, with Dixon taking third on the play. One out later, John Giudice hit a single that scored Dixon and gave Salem a 1-0 lead. Randy Snyder then walked to load the bases, and Keith Grunewald followed with another walk to bring in Culp and give the Avalanche a 2-0 lead. Chris Sexton's walk brought in Giudice for the third run, and Snyder came home on a wild pitch by Stewart to finish the scoring in the inning as the Avalanche took a 4-0 lead.

Frederick (13-25) countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. With two out, Byrne reached on an infield single, which was followed by walks to Hector Castaneda and Jesse Garcia to load the bases. Trovin Valdez then hit a grounder to short that Sexton fielded but threw over first baseman Nate Holdren's head, allowing two runs to score as Frederick cut the Salem lead to 4-2.

The Avalanche put two more on the board in the top of the third. Dixon struck out, but reached first by virtue of a wild pitch on the third strike. Culp then walked to chase Stewart as Frederick brought in John Lombardi. After Holdren struck out and Giudice grounded out, Snyder hit a two-out, two-run single that gave the Avalanche a 6-2 lead.

Edgard Velasquez went 3-for-5 for Salem and Snyder went 1-for-3 and knocked in two runs.

Center fielder Clayton Byrne went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Keys.

Stewart (2-3) was the losing pitcher, going two innings and giving up all six runs on two hits. He struck out four, but walked five and threw two wild pitches. The Avalanche's Matt Aminoff, who had not pitched since April 29, threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

Keith Barnes will start for Salem when the teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
