LUTHERANS RE-ELECT BANSEMER

The Rev. Richard Bansemer was re-elected bishop of the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at the body's annual assembly in Salem on Saturday.

Bansemer begins his third term as the synod's ecclesiastical leader. This was the first time a bishop was elected for a six-year term, extended from the previous four years.

Elected vice president, the highest lay position, was Kathryn K. Buchanan, assistant to the president for church relations at Roanoke College and a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Roanoke.

The new secretary of the synod is Mark Reed, a Luray lawyer.

The Lutherans' annual assembly concludes today with consideration of a $2 million budget for fiscal 1996.
