SALEM, NORTHSIDE SETTLE FOR 2ND BEST

CYNTHIA LUNDSTROM helps the Spartans to a second-place finish in the girls' competition while the Vikings are the boys' runners-up in the Group AA Region III track meet.

Salem High School's Cynthia Lundstrom found it more difficult to explain her two victories in the hurdles than she did to round the track and clear the obstacles to begin with.

``I'm not sure how it happened,'' she said. ``There was good weather and I had a good attitude. I think maybe I was a little more focused.''

Lundstrom turned in personal bests of 14.9 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 47.09 in the 300 hurdles at the Group AA Region III meet at Liberty University on Saturday.

``I'm very happy,'' she said. ``I'm thrilled.''

Salem coach Tom Roth was as happy with the times as he was with the victories.

``She was about two seconds faster than she has been in the 300,'' he said. ``That's a heck of a drop. When you're under 15 seconds on FAT [Fully Automatic Timing], that's quality.''

Despite Lunsdstrom's best efforts and a win in the 400 relay by Shellie Johnson, Marilyn Huang, Shelva Clemons, and Shanell Manning, the Spartans couldn't hold off William Campbell for the team title. The Generals scored 70 points to Salem's 63. Lord Botetourt (59) finished third, Appomattox fourth and Laurel Park fifth.

``I was figuring before the meet that 60 points would be a good day for us and we came out ahead of that,'' Roth said.

In the boys' meet, Appomattox scored 72 points to outdistance Northside (52), Nelson County (471/2), Bassett (42), and Dan River (41).

Bassett's Tyree Hairston won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches - far below the 6-8 he reached several weeks ago. But Hairston was just glad to be participating.

``I burned my leg Monday when my car caught on fire,'' he said. ``The gas line had a leak in it and when I started the car, a spark set it off. Flames were coming through the vents into the car. I was pretty scared.''

Fortunately, he survived to tell about it. The car met an unhappier fate.

``It's gone,'' he said.

Lord Botetourt's Takisha Basham had a big day by winning the discus with a personal best 112-3.

``I've been throwing 119 feet in practice,'' she said. ``I watched the girl from Christiansburg [Maureen Jackson] at the Cosmo meet because she's throwing over 120 feet. I learned a lot from that.''

Basham has plenty more education ahead of her. She's only a freshman.

In the next to last event of the day, Liberty's girls' 1,600 relay team of Jennifer Hefley, Missy Sumner, Kate Warner, and Barbra Divers won the 1,600 relay. The Minettes beat second place Laurel Park and recorded a winning time of 4:16.
