RAIN DELAYS REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS

Rain postponed all three high school regional tournaments scheduled Friday involving Timesland teams.

The Region C softball tournament semifinals will begin today at 1:30 p.m. at Green Hill Park in Salem. Glenvar will take on Castlewood in one semifinal game and Floyd County will meet James River in the other.

The Region IV baseball tournament has been reset for today with all games being played at Tazewell. Christiansburg meets Abingdon at 1 p.m. and Blacksburg takes on Tazewell at 4 p.m.

The winners of those two games will qualify for the Group AA state tournament and play in the championship game tonight at 7.

The Region III softball championship game, in which Rustburg play hosts to William Byrd, has been postponed until today at 4 p.m.

Friday night's game between the Salem Avalanche and Prince William Cannons was postponed until today because of rain. The Avalanche and Cannons will play a doubleheader today starting at 6 p.m. at Municipal Field.

Cindy Jancso, a junior from Ferrum, was named to the Academic All-State third-team in voting by sports information directors across the state.

Jancso, who was also selected to the team last year, plays tennis and volleyball. She is undefeated in Dixie Conference play the past two years at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, and is a defensive specialist on the volleyball team.

Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio, president of Winthrop University, has been re-elected as president of the Big South Conference. Also re-elected to serve for the next three years were Dr. Jairy Hunter (vice president), the president at Charleston Southern, and Dr. Pierre Guillermin (secretary), Liberty's president.

Children share the spotlight with racing activities tonight in the Cloud's Clothing/Jordan Oil-Marathon 200 at New River Valley Speedway.

Prior to the racing action at 8 p.m., the Kazim Temple animal characters and hillbillies will stage a show during pre-race ceremonies. It is also Scout Night and all scouts in uniform will be admitted free. A Pennzoil go-kart also will be given away.

Late Model Stock drivers will be featured in 100 laps of racing, while the Limiteds go for 35 laps. Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks are each scheduled for 25 laps. In addition, a Shriners Enduro 100-lapper with a one-hour time limit, will take the place of the Mod Mini race.

Gates open at 1:30 p.m., with practice at 3:30. Qualifying begins at 6 with the first race at 8.
