NRVS NOT A COMPLETE WASHOUT

For the third time in four weeks, weather was the winner Saturday night at New River Valley Speedway.

After two rain delays totaling 2 1/2 hours, the Cloud's Clothing/Jordan-Marathon Oil 200 was called off. Rained out were the 100-lap Late Model Stock feature, the 100-lap Enduro and the 25-lap Pure Stock race.

Two races were run before the rains came, though.

In the 35-lap Limited Sportsman race, pole-sitter Charlie Miles of Christiansburg led every lap en route to victory.

Rain started falling during a caution period on lap 26 of the Limited Sportsman race. After 90 minutes, the rain subsided and the Late Models drove around the track to dry the surface.

By the time racing resumed, there had a been a two-hour delay. But after a couple of laps, rain began to fall again. The race was completed, but the shower forced the cancellation of the rest of the night's program.

Mark Akers of Narrows finished second, Jay McCray of Salem third and Eddie Walls of Hillsville fourth.

Tam Tophan of Wytheville was awarded fifth place. Aaron Deplazes, the apparent fifth-place finisher, was disqualified for having an altered carburetor and carburetor base plate. Tophan was running third before the late-race shower, but slowed in the final laps and fell to sixth.

In the 25-lap Mini Stock race, Kevin Kenley of Radford made his first start of the season a successful one as he won the pole and led from start to finish.

A last-lap charge by Ray Sowers of Floyd came up half a car-length short. Kevin Light of Pilot finished third.

However, the official finishing order was being withheld by track officials, pending technical inspection of crank shafts scheduled today. The missed races will be worked into the schedule during the season.

The races were not run Sunday because the speedway hosted WKA Go Kart races that had been rescheduled after a May 28 rainout.

In those races, Jason Lawrence of Floyd and Berkley Moore of Boones Mill were the big winners.

Lawrence won the Super Stock class, with Moore taking the Heavy Stock. Vinton's Jeff French won the Briggs Modified class, with Travis Brinkley of Mount Airy, N.C., placing first in the Junior Restricted class.

Other winners Sunday were Jeff French, Vinton, Limited Modified; Jimmy Arthur, Bedford, Stock Medium; Timothy Peters, Providence, N.C., Junior Stock; Jason Lawrence, Floyd, Stock Light; Stephen Crouch, Bedford, Junior Sportsman I, and Hunter Pierce, Natural Bridge, Junior Sportsman II.

The next WKA races are set for June 18, with gates opening at 10 a.m. and practice at noon. Action begins immediately after practice.
