BASEBALL NOTES

A'S DRAFT RADFORD'S FILCHNER: Duane Filchner, a senior outfielder from Radford, was selected in the 23rd round of this year's baseball draft by the Oakland Athletics.

The Northampton, Pa., native batted .389 this season with a school-record 81 hits and 60 runs scored. Filchner, who is a three-time All-Big South Conference selection had 15 homers and 51 RBI this season, and holds virtually every Radford offensive record.

SHELTON SIGNS WITH CHICAGO: Barry Shelton, a Patrick Henry High School graduate who was the NAIA Great Lakes Independent Conference baseball player of the year, signed with the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

Shelton, a rising senior at West Virginia State, reports first to a Sarasota, Fla., minicamp and will be designated for assignment, he said. He hit .493 with 18 home runs and 72 RBI this year.
