ROBERTSON GOES TO VARNEY

Nick Varney of Glenvar High School was chosen Wednesday as the recipient of the Scott Robertson Memorial scholarship.

Varney, 17, received an $8,000 award toward his education at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where he begins school this fall.

Varney was a four-year star in golf and tennis at Glenvar, which won Group A state titles in both sports this past school year. He also was a starter on the Highlanders' basketball team, which was the Group A runner-up last season.

Varney ranked fourth academically in his graduating class of 97 with a 3.66 grade-point average. He also was president of the school's National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Key Club.

``This award was very unexpected,'' said Varney, whose future plans include medical school. ``I'm grateful that the selection committee chose me. It's certainly a great honor.''

Dana Hall, a senior at Cave Spring High, was selected as the winner of the first E.A. Hawthorne scholarship, established in honor of the longtime Robertson Memorial supporter who passed away last month.

Hall will use the $2,000 scholarship for her education at the University of Virginia.

Hall was valedictorian of her class at Cave Spring with a 4.0476 grade-point average. She was vice president of the Beta Club, a member of Senior Council and member of the Knights' marching band. She is heavily involved in numerous community activities, including helping her father organize a golf tournament for the Veterans Hospital in 1993.

``Nick and Dana are outstanding students and leaders,'' said Ed Riley, chairman of the scholarship selection committee. ``We're proud to have them win these scholarships and wish them great success at college and beyond.''

The awards were based on academic achievement, citizenship, character and activity associated with golf. The scholarships are available to any high school senior in the Roanoke Valley who has been associated with golf.

The scholarships are given in conjunction with the annual Robertson Memorial golf tournament. The 12th Robertson will be held Aug.7-10 at Roanoke Country Club.

The tournament is named in honor of Scott Robertson, a young Roanoke golfer who died in 1982 after being afflicted by a rare bone disease.
