SHIRLEY 3-PEATS IN HALL OF FAME

The Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame women's championship continues to belong to youth and innocence.

Respecting her elders everywhere but on the scorecard, 18-year-old Lee Shirley captured her record-tying third straight HOF title Sunday at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Shirley fired a final-round of 5-over-par 77 to finish at 9-over 153, two shots better than late-charging Dot Bolling.

``It's great to win this tournament again,'' said Shirley, who matched Penny Stallins' three-peat from 1985-87.

``I'm hoping to come back next year and try [for a fourth straight title]. It just depends on how things work out.''

Things worked out Sunday. Shirley, who led by three shots after a first-round 76 at Hunting Hills on Saturday, pretty much had it on final-round cruise control until hearing Bolling's late footsteps.

``I was on No.16 when I first heard that Dot was playing a really good round,'' Shirley said. "I had bogeyed three straight holes at that point [Nos. 14-16] and I knew I needed to par the last two.''

Shirley took care of business, again leaving Bolling short of the one local title that has eluded her.

Bolling, who was 2-under through 13 holes Sunday, finished with an even-par 72. Nice round, but not enough when added to a horrendous first-round 83.

``I lost the tournament [Saturday],'' Bolling said. ``I took four penalty shots on two holes [Nos. 10 and 11]. You can't win a tournament on the first day, but you sure can lose one, and that's what happened to me.

``Today makes it better, though. I had to come back and redeem myself.''

It was Bolling's third second-place finish in the HOF.

``Dot will win this tournament one day,'' Shirley said. ``She's an excellent player, too good a player to not win it.''

Kathy Hull recorded her second straight 79 to take third. Cathi Caldwell (79) was fourth at 161, while Ann Kite (83) took fifth at 162.

In team play, Countryside captured its second straight and record ninth championship.

Paced by Sara Cole (77), Hull (79) and 83s by Mar-C Milona and Marilyn Bussey, Countryside finished with a tournament total of 478 to whip runner-up Hidden Valley by seven shots.
