BEDFORD MAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT

A Bedford man, who police said had been drinking, was hit and killed by a van Friday night while walking on U.S. 221.

Samuel Albert McDaniel, 22, of Route 6 was riding with his wife, Angela McDaniel, and Tom Watson of Bedford in a pickup when he tried to leave the truck while it was moving.

State Trooper D.A. Martin said McDaniel was intoxicated and arguing with his wife. Watson pulled the truck over onto the shoulder and McDaniel walked into the southbound lane of U.S. 221, about two miles north of Bedford, with his back to traffic, Martin said.

McDaniel, who was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans, was hit by a van at approximately 9:45 p.m. He died at Bedford County Memorial Hospital at 11:25 p.m.

Martin said there are no charges being filed against the driver of the van, Charles Austin Mitchell of Huddleston.

Visibility was poor where the accident occurred, according to Martin. He said it was dark, the van was on a curve going downhill and McDaniel was walking adjacent to the center line.

``[Mitchell] had no chance to see him,'' Martin said.
