8-YEAR-OLD KILLED IN ACCIDENT

An 8-year-old Roanoke girl died Saturday morning in South Carolina when the van her family was riding in wrecked and then was hit by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 26 between Orangeburg and Columbia.

Kathrine ``Katie'' Ann George, 8, daughter of Debbie E. and Scott D. George, died as a result of what South Carolina State Police Cpl. D.R. Bledsoe called ``two separate accidents.''

Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, a van driven by Scott George swerved into the median on Interstate 26 in Calhoun County. The van swerved back to the right and turned over on its side with part of the van lying in the path of oncoming traffic.

Debbie George was helping the couple's children get out of the van when a tractor-trailer truck struck the van. Katie, who had been thrown from the van, was hit by the truck and died at the scene, said Cpl. Nick Wallen.

Scott George, 12, and Heather George, 15, were listed in fair condition Saturday night in Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

George, his wife, and two of their children, 8-year-old Emily (Katie's twin) and 4-year-old Kyle, were treated for minor injuries and released.

Wallen said the accident was being investigated, but he said he did not expect charges to be filed against the driver of the truck, Ivery Baldwin, 52, of Charlotte, N.C. Baldwin was not injured.
