Fiddler's convention

The 60th Annual Old Fiddler's Convention will be held Aug. 9-12 in Felts Park, Galax. Cash prizes, trophies and ribbons will be awarded.

Aug. 9 will feature old-time fiddle, clawhammer banjo, dobro, mandolin and autoharp competitions; Aug. 10 will include bluegrass fiddle, guitar, dulcimer and bluegrass banjo; Aug. 11 will have old-time and bluegrass bands; Aug. 12 in the afternoon will include folk song and dance and bluegrass and old time bands in the evening.

Camping is available. No dogs, skateboards, bicycles, motorcycles or ATVs will be permitted on the grounds. Drug and alcohol laws will be enforced.

Admission is $5 Wednesday and Thursday, $7 Friday and Saturday. A four-day ticket is $20. Childen under 12 are free with adult escort.

Romance writers

The Virginia Romance Writers is planning ``Romance in Roanoke'' on Aug. 5 at the Roanoke Airport Marriott.

The event features a breakfast with the authors, seminars with Waldenbooks' Mike Sproull and Charlene Keel, publisher of ``I'll Take Romance,'' and a charity benefit booksigning at Waldenbooks in Valley View Mall. A portion of the proceeds from the book signing will assist the Roanoke Area Literacy Council.

Cost for the morning session is $16. There is no admission charge for the book signing.

Film seminar

Evan Lottman, editor of 17 feature films, including ``Presumed Innocent,'' ``Apocalypse Now!'' and ``Sophie's Choice'' will present a film-analysis seminar Sept. 27-28 at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities Center for Media and Culture in Charlottesville.

Participants will focus on ``Presumed Innocent'' and ``Sophie's Choice.'' The overall program will concern itself with the construction of feature films, the role of the editor and the relationship between editor and director.

Lottman was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on ``The Exorcist.''

Registration deadline for the seminar is July 28. The fee is $140. Space is limited.

Commonwealth games

The Commonwealth Games of Virginia will officially open July 14 at 8 p.m. at Victory Stadium, Roanoke.

Los Angeles Laker George Lynch, ``Ms. Fitness World'' Carol Semple, and Al Meade, a Paralympian and member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, will be featured at the opening ceremonies.

The games are a multisport festival of Olympic and non-Olympic style competition for Virginia amateur athletes of all ages and skill levels.

More than 40 sports were represented last year by almost 8,000 athletes. New to the games this year are ballroom dancing, roller hockey, an advanced AAU division in boys' basketball and high school girls' lacrosse.

Another new addition is the Sports Expo on July 13, 1-9 p.m., and July 14, 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., featuring exhibits, demonstrations and attractions.

Most events are set for the weekend of July14-16 with the exception of youth swimming on June 23-24, cross country and equestrian events on July 8, autocross and powerlifting on July 9, horseshoes on July 8-9 and mixed doubles tennis on July 22-23.

One-act plays

The Southwest Virginia Theater for Youth will perform two one-act plays, ``Once Upon A Summertime'' and ``Clown's Play,'' today and Friday at the Salem Camp Meeting Hall, Third and Colorado Streets, Salem.

Other plays that will be performed include ``Scapino!'' and ``I Never Saw Another Butterfly,'' July 20-21, ``That's What Friends Are For, July 27-28, and ``You Don't Have To Die,'' Aug. 11-12.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for under 18. Season tickets are available. The box office (389-4397) is open Monday through Friday, 4-9 p.m.

Salem Fair

The Eighth Annual Salem Fair opens Friday through July 9 at the fairgrounds adjacent to the Salem Civic Center.

A midway and more than 35 rides are joined by nightly concerts at 7 and 8:30 p.m.

Kiddieland, with more than 12 rides, a petting zoo, pony and elephant rides, Sunshine the Clown and a carousel offer entertainment for young children.

New attractions include The Sensational Leighs performing on the Giant Space Wheel, The Star-Riders, a three-person aerial motorcycle act and Kachunga and the Alligator, which features an American Bushman and a 300-pound alligator.

Also new are racing armadillos, a World POG Federation POG contest and ``Fantasy on Ice,'' featuring world professional champion skater Lori Benton.

New this year on the midway are the Ring of Fire Super Loops and the Starship 2000.

Returning acts include Robinson's Racing Pigs, with six daily shows, and David Hamilton's Wonderful World of Balloons.

Free shuttle bus service will operate from the main parking lot of the General Electric plant on Electric Road and Shenandoah Avenue to the fairgrounds during peak times.

The gates will open on Saturdays, Sundays and July 4 at noon and on weekdays at 4 p.m. The fair closes at approximately midnight each night.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children with discount coupons available.

Czech concert tour

Thirty-eight members of Lynchburg's Jefferson Choral Society will begin an 11-day concert tour to the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria on Sunday.

Carl Harris, director of the 100-member group, is a graduate of and former teacher at Andrew Lewis High School. He taught voice at Roanoke College before moving to Lynchburg. He directs the Choral Society and the Randolph-Macon Woman's College Chorale.

The chorus will perform sacred and secular works, primarily by American composers. Selections have also been prepared to be sung in Latin, German and Czech.

Juried art exhibit

Applications are now available for the seventh annual Seasons of Color Juried Art Exhibit, sponsored by Carnegie Hall, Lewisburg, W.Va.

The exhibit will feature two-dimensional works including oil paintings, other painting media, drawing/graphics, photography and mixed media.

Artists must be 18 or older. Each artist may submit up to three works. Work must be original and cannot have been exhibited in a previous Season of Colors. Entries must be framed and wired ready to hang.

Each work must be accompanied by an entry form and $5 entry fee.

The works will be judged in September. Cash awards will be given for first, second and third places in each category. The exhibit will hang at Carnegie Hall from Oct. 2 through 27.

Zoo fund-raiser

Zoo Do, a fund-raiser for Mill Mountain Zoo in Roanoke, will be hosted by the Blue Ridge Zoological Society on July 21 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Food will be prepared by area restaurants and caterers, and music will be by The Key West Band. There will be a live and silent auction of donated items and vacation retreats.

Dress is casual.

Tickets are $25 per person, $45 per couple in advance, $30 per person, $55 per couple at the door.

Writing contest

The Writers' Workshop is sponsoring its Sixth Annual Thomas Wolfe Writing Contest, open to students 8 to 18.

Cash awards are given in the 8-12 and 13-18 categories. Winners will also receive a one year membership to the Writers' Workshop.

Students may submit one story (up to 10 pages) or three poems (one page each), double-spaced, printed or typed. Include name, birth date, address and telephone number, plus $5 and a self addressed stamped envelope for return of your work and a list of winners.

Bus trip

A bus trip is planned to the Carman concert on Aug. 12 at King's Dominion near Richmond.

The bus will leave from the First Baptist Church parking lot on Third Street, Roanoke, at 6:30 a.m., on the 12th. A Lynchburg pick up is scheduled for 7:30 a.m.

The bus is an air-conditioned motor coach. A free continental breakfast will be served.

The concert begins at 6 p.m. and the bus will return to Lynchburg and Roanoke afterwards.

The $62 price includes round trip transportation, tickets to King's Dominion theme park and the concert.

The trip is sponsored by Spirit FM, Roanoke's Christian music station, a not-for-profit organization.
