MARINERS SINK DAWGS

An early goal by Hampton Roads doomed Roanoke to a 3-1 loss Saturday night in a U.S. Interregional Soccer League game at Cave Spring Junior High School.

Joe Herrman scored with 1:03 gone to put the Mariners (11-2) on the board. They never relinquished the lead.

The RiverDawgs (3-9) outshot Hampton Roads 15-6, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.

Brandon Ward scored at the 19:58 mark to give the Mariners a 2-0 margin at the break.

Byron Mitchell found the net off a feed from Brent Bennett at 47:40 for Roanoke's sole goal. The RiverDawgs were on a breakaway attempt with nine seconds remaining, but Hampton Roads stole the ball, and Wayne Pratt fed Darren Eales for the final goal.

The Mariners' Garth Lagerway stopped 12 shots, and Roanoke's Aaron Ewert managed three saves.

The RiverDawgs plays at Nashville at 8:30 p.m. today and return home for a July 8 game with the Myrtle Beach Boyz at 7:30 p.m.
