DISASTER CENTER SET UP IN GARDEN CITY

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will set up a one-day disaster assistance center Monday at Garden City Elementary School, 3718 Garden City Blvd. S.E.

The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Federal representatives will work one-on-one with Roanoke residents and business owners whose property was damaged in the recent flood.

Available aid includes grants and loans, temporary housing, home repairs and other major disaster-related needs.

Survey teams will set appointments for a later date to verify damage to applicants' homes and businesses.

The center was put in Garden City, which was hardest hit, but it is open to any Roanoker with flood-damaged property, since the entire city was declared a disaster area.

People also can apply for assistance by phone. The toll-free FEMA telephone number is (800) 462-9029.

``It's important for citizens to know that a case number must be assigned for their claim to be processed,'' said Wanda Reed, Roanoke's coordinator of emergency services. ``If they called the 800 number and reported their damage but didn't get a case number, they either need to come by the assistance center or call the 800 number again.''

FEMA is trying to speed checks to applicants. The goal is to have checks in the mail within two weeks of application.
