WYATT, BROWN AMONG PPA FAVORITES

Barry Wyatt of Martinsville and Mike Brown of Philadelphia will be among the favorites today in the Professional Putters Association's Roanoke Open.

The tournament, which is being played at the Putt-Putt Golf Course on Peters Creek Road, is the second to last event on the 1995 National PPA schedule. The three-round, 54-hole tournament tees off at 9 a.m.

The tournament features PPA members with National Pro status. The players are competing for the right to appear on the 1995 Putt-Putt Skins television show that is being taped by PGA Tour Productions for airing on ESPN later this year.

Wyatt, a PPA member for 21 years, attained National Pro status this year. The Martinsville deputy sheriff has captured three titles in his career and carries a per-round stroke average of 30.7.

Brown, 25, recently pocketed $5,000 in a TV Skins match.

In action Saturday, Danny McCaslin of Metarie, La., fired a three-round total of 26-under 82 to capture the Roanoke Challenge. Marylander Danny Dore was second, three shots back, while Roanoke native Jerry Mitchell finished third, four strokes back.

In the amateur division, Roanoker Clay Craft overwhelmed the field with a 27-under 81. The novice division winner was Marylander Rusty Taylor, who shot 2-over 110. Roanoke native Jeff Dickerson took second in a playoff.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke reached the final of the Boys' 18 division at the Van Der Meer Junior tennis tournament being held at Sweet Briar College.

Hippensteel, 15, defeated Tim Martin of Richmond 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. Hippensteel is working with teaching pro Ricky

Brown and Roanoke junior player Adams England in preparation for the U.S.Boys' 16 Clay Court Championships later this month in Nashville, Tenn.

Joanne Bogner of Christiansburg and Harley Johnson of Providence, R.I., won the women's and men's solo competitions at the 10th annual Pedal, Paddle, Splash and Dash quadrathlon held in Radford.

Blacksburg's Jesse Saunders and Christiansburg's Tom Johnson came in second in men's pairs, and Jennifer and Gary Shelor of Radford were second in mixed pairs.

The team of David Wright and Ben Thomas of Blacksburg with Dublin's Eddie Sayers and Radford's Shirley Reese won the four-person mixed pairs. Blacksburg's Ed Fallen and Marvin Ballard along with Garris Moore of Penbrook and Mike Leid of Christiansburg won the four-man men's team competition.

John Tucker of Lexington took home the silver medal in the pentathlon at the USA Track and Field National Masters Championships this past Wednesday. Tucker has taken the silver in the men's 45-49 age group three of the past four years. He totaled 3,592 points for the five events, second-best in the entire competition. He is also the coach of the men's and women's track and field teams at Washington and Lee.

Rocky Mount Post 6 defeated Roanoke Post 3 South 10-5 in American Legion baseball. Larry Bowles and Jason Altice had two hits each and combined to strike out 12 batters for Rocky Mount (7-1). Brian Staggs and Robert Kaczmarek had two hits each for Post 3 South (1-5), and Kaczmarek struck out six in three innings of relief.
