RIVERDAWGS SHOT DOWN

ROANOKE HAS ITS CHANCES, but Myrtle Beach gets the goals.

With the first half quietly passing by, the Roanoke RiverDawgs battled with the Myrtle Beach Boyz before losing 2-1 Saturday in a USISL soccer game at Cave Spring Junior High School.

In the first half, RiverDawgs midfielder Mike McFarland got off a shot on goal but was stopped short by Myrtle Beach goalie Warren Russ.

Boyz midfielder Gerard Gregoire answered the shot with one of his own, but it was rejected by Dawgs goalie Aaron Ewert. Henry Gutierrez launched another shot for the Boyz that was stopped by Ewert .

Eduardo Wissar made a goal attempt for Roanoke, but was stopped at the goal.

During the second half, the action got under way. The Myrtle Beach Boyz came out fighting as they made their first goal by defender Troy Edwards, assisted by Gutierrez.

The goal did not go unanswered as Grayson Prillaman, a Dawg midfielder, assisted Nelson Vasquez on a goal to make the score 1-1.

But with only a few minutes left, the Boyz came back.

Chris Dias assisted Edwards to put in the final goal for the Boyz to make the final score 2-1.

With three of the RiverDawgs out and one team member playing injured, coach Ed McMichael thought his team played well.

``I think we're playing exciting soccer,'' McMichael said. ``It was a pretty even game. We had more chances in the second half."

McMichael said that the team may have difficulty scoring but ``offensively, we're dangerous.''

McMichael thinks some of the games have come down to luck.

``It was the same kind of game as Hampton Roads,'' said McMichael, where the Dawgs also lost 2-1 last weekend. ``We were just really unlucky.''
