Poets, writers featured

A Books-A-Million Spoken Word Open Mike will be held Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m., at Books-A-Million in Crossroads Mall, Roanoke.

Poets Bob Falls, co-founder of Poetry Alive!, based in Asheville, N.C., and Charles Curtis Blackwell, of Sacramento, Calif., will perform. Local writers Rob Webb and Claire Born will also be featured.

Sign up for open mike performers will be at 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded.

Genealogy seminar

The Southwestern Genealogical Society is presenting a seminar on African American Genealogy on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Roanoke City Library Auditorium, 706 S. Jefferson St.

Donald Peery, a native of Giles County and college sociology teacher from Florida, will speak on ``Addressing Some of the Special Concerns and Problems of African-American Genealogical Research.''

Gospel music

The Sheraton Inn Roanoke Airport is presenting the grand opening of The Praise Cafe on Friday, from 7-11 p.m.

Guests are invited to bring their favorite recorded Christian music for karaoke or may perform at the open microphone. D.J. Don Taylor will play contemporary Christian artists and traditional gospel music.

Liles & Taylor, a gospel duet, will perform.

Broadcasting awards

The Virginia Association of Broadcasters announced at its annual meeting that area stations won the following awards:

WROV-FM, Roanoke, tied for the 1994 Metro Radio award for Best Commercial for ``Roanoke Athletic Club-Blues.''

WYVE-AM Wytheville, won the 1994 Non-Metro Radio award for Best Commercial for ``Wythe-Ford.''

WDBJ-TV, Roanoke, won the 1994 Television award for Best Documentary or Public Affairs Program for ``Stories of Heroes - Virginians at Normandy.''

The Virginia Association of Broadcasters represents more than 100 radio and television stations throughout the commonwealth.
