LUCK OF DRAW LIFTS WARTHOGS

AN UNUSUAL way of determining the batting order helps Winston-Salem whip Salem 9-1.

Maybe Winston-Salem manager Mark Berry should determine his batting order by having his players draw their names from a hat more often.

Berry's strategy resulted in a nine-run barrage as the Warthogs broke a seven-game losing streak by blasting the Salem Avalanche 9-1 in Carolina League action on Wednesday night.

The Warthogs (17-22) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Johnny Bess reached on a throwing error by Chris Sexton, and Guillermo Garcia singled to put runners at the corners. Aaron Boone and Donald Broach followed with back-to-back, run-scoring singles off Salem starter Doug Million for the game's first two runs. Two outs later, Ricky Magdaleno singled in Boone to give the Warthogs a 3-0 lead.

Winston-Salem added two more runs in the third off Million. Boone led off with a walk, and Broach doubled to put runners at second and third with no outs. After Ray Brown struck out, Danny Oyas' RBI groundout scored Boone with Winston-Salem's fourth run. Magdaleno followed with a single to drive in his second run of the game for a 5-0 lead.

Jimmy White's one-out, two-run homer in the sixth gave Winston-Salem a 7-0 lead. The Warthogs added two more in the inning when Chad Akers singled and both Bess and Boone walked to load the bases. Salem reliever Chris Stewart then threw a wild pitch that got past Salem catcher Jason Smith. Smith retrieved the ball and tried to get Akers coming home, but his throw hit Akers and bounced away, allowing Bess to come home for a nine-run lead.

Salem (20-18) scored its run in the eighth. John Giudice led off with a double and came around one out later on Steve Bernhardt's infield single.

Million (4-5) took the loss, going three innings and giving up five runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out two. Curt Lyons (7-8) picked up the win, pitching six shutout innings and giving up three hits while walking one and striking out eight
