CRASH ON U.S. 220 KILLS 2 FLOYD GIRLS

Two Floyd County girls were killed Thursday evening when the car they were in crossed into oncoming traffic and was hit.

Valerie Dawn Wade, 16, of Floyd, died at the scene, according to a state police report. Christina Shepard, 15, of Twin Falls Road in Copper Hill, died at Roanoke Memorial Hospital three hours later.

They were in a car driven by Adam Harris, headed north on U.S. 221 near Copper Hill, police said. About 5:30 p.m., Harris' car ran onto the right shoulder, crossed into the southbound lane, then was hit by an oncoming car. It was unclear whether either of the girls was wearing a seat belt.

No charges have been filed.
