FLOYD STARTS YEAR WITH ANOTHER WIN

Reigning Group A champion Floyd County used 19 points from Julie Sowers and 18 from Melissa Cantrell to secure its 57th consecutive victory, a 72-64 triumph over Group AA Fieldale-Collinsville on Wednesday night at the Lady Buffs Invitational in Floyd.

The Buffaloes, who will play Patrick County tonight on the second day of the tournament.

Carrie Quinlan scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the first half for Fieldale-Collinsville (0-1), which will play Blacksburg tonight.

JV: Floyd County 51, Patrick County 21.

Blacksburg 51, Patrick County 47: April Rogers hit four free throws in the last 37 seconds to lift the Indians over the Cougars at the Lady Buffs Invitational in Floyd.

Rogers, who made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, scored 13 of her game-high 19 in the second half after sitting for most of the first half and third quarter because of foul trouble.

Blacksburg (1-0) will play Fieldale-Collinsville tonight on the second day of the tournament. Patrick County (0-1) will meet Floyd County.

Lord Botetourt 66, Magna Vista 49: The Cavaliers' junior tandem of Sara Moore and Sarah Hicks took over in the second half, combining to score 27 of their team's 36 points as the Cavaliers ran away from the Warriors on the first day of the Lord Botetourt Invitational in Daleville.

Moore scored 11 of her 21 points in the second half and Hicks had 15 of her 21 in the second half as the Cavaliers (1-0), who will meet Alleghany tonight on the second day of the tournament, broke open a two-point game at halftime.

Magna Vista (0-1), which will play R.E. Lee-Staunton tonight, was led by Sandi Reid, who scored a team-high 14.

R.E. Lee Staunton 56, Alleghany 51: Katrina Lassiter had 13 points as reigning Group AA champion Lee built a nine-point halftime lead in beating the Mountaineers on the first day of the Lord Botetourt Tipoff Tournament in Daleville.

Alleghany (0-1) got a game-high 19 points from Katie Craft, including three 3-pointers.

JV: Alleghany 44, Lord Botetourt 43.

Carroll County 61, Rocky Gap 33: Bethany Hill scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as Carroll County took a 21-point lead and cruised to the victory over the Eagles (0-2) at the Lady Cavalier Tip-Off Invitational in Hillsville.

Jennifer Watkins scored seven of her nine points in the first half for Carroll County (2-0), which will meet Radford tonight.

Rocky Gap was led by Amanda Clark, who scored 12 points.

Galax 52, Christiansburg 35: The Maroon Tide used full-court pressure to break open a close game at halftime and defeat the Blue Demons on the second day of the Lady Cavalier Tip-Off Invitational in Hillsville.

Tammy Cox led the way for Galax (2-0) with 14 points while Tiffany Williams and Erin Kyle added 12 each. The Maroon Tide faces Rocky Gap today in its tournament finale.

Lisa Dalton scored 10 points for the Blue Demons (1-1), who meet Grayson County today.

Radford 48, Grayson County 32: Charlee Taylor and Crystal Hubbard took over in the second quarter as the Bobcats outscored the Blue Devils 17-7 en route to victory in the Lady Cavalier Tip-Off Invitational in Hillsville.

Taylor scored seven of her game-high 19 points in the quarter and Hubbard had six of her 13 as Radford (1-1) took a 39-29 lead. The Bobcats meet host Carroll County tonight.

Lindsey Carico scored 10 points to lead Grayson County (0-2), which will meet Christiansburg today.
