NFL NOTES

OILERS: The Oilers will be free to leave Houston after the 1997 season after resolving their lawsuit with Harris County, the city and Astrodome USA.

The agreement calls for the Oilers to play all regular season and postseason home games in the Astrodome through the end of the 1997 season.

In exchange, ``the county, city, and Astrodome USA commit without qualification not to sue, obstruct, impede or otherwise attempt to prevent the Oilers and [team owner Bud] Adams from relocating the Oilers to another city at the end of the 1997 NFL football season,'' according to the decree.

For more than a year, Adams has campaigned for Houston taxpayers to build a new domed stadium with lucrative luxury boxes. City and county officials repeatedly have said they can't afford the estimated $235 million.

Adams is negotiating with Nashville, Tenn., officials about moving his team to a 76,000-seat, open-air stadium there for the 1998 season.

JETS: New York waived former Virginia standout Tyrone Davis, a fourth-round draft pick, from its receiving corps and activated Curtis Ceaser from its practice squad.

``We felt we needed more speed and quickness,'' coach Rich Kotite said in explaining the move.

Davis had one catch for 9 yards in two regular-season games. Ceaser, a seventh-round draft choice from Grambling, had four receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown during the preseason.
