COURT REJECTS EX-BEAUTY QUEEN'S APPEAL

The state Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down the appeal of a Virginia beauty queen convicted of trying to kill a romantic rival's family.

The justices voted 5-0 in rejecting the petition of Tracy Lippard, 24, of Newport News.

She was sentenced in January to two years in prison for a February 1994 attack on the Lewisburg family of Melissa Weikle, who was pregnant by a former boyfriend of Lippard's.

Lippard crowned her successor as Miss Williamsburg in February 1994, then drove 250 miles to Lewisburg the next day, according to testimony.

She was convicted of threatening Weikle's mother with a pistol and hitting Weikle's father with a hammer before the father subdued her.

Lippard denied attacking the family, saying she traveled to confront her former boyfriend, Todd Scott. Scott and Melissa Weikle have since married.

George Yates, a lawyer for Lippard, argued that jury selection was done too quickly and the questioning was too cursory to rid the panel of jurors who favored the prosecution.
