CAVS GAME NOTES

Virginia offensive tackle Chris Harrison, granted a rare sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, was able to experience the Cavaliers' first victory over Clemson and their first triumph at Clemson.

"I wasn't as emotional after this game,'' said Harrison after UVa's 22-3 win Saturday. "In 1990 [when UVa beat Clemson 20-7 at home], we had Shawn Moore and Herman Moore and the place went crazy.

"This victory may have been more satisfying because I had a bigger part in it. I was also here in 1991, when we were up until the fourth quarter and they came back to tie us (20-20). That hurt a lot.''

Harrison not only has been a member of Virginia's team for all three of its victories over Clemson, but he thought he had a fourth, when UVa blew a 28-0 lead in losing to the Tigers 29-28 in 1992. He missed the 1993 game, a 23-14 Clemson victory, with a serious leg injury.

NO BUBBLY

Virginia coach George Welsh laughed at the suggestion that the Cavaliers could crack the champagne they allegedly had on ice in 1985, when favored UVa lost 27-24 at Clemson.

"I'm going to call Danny and tell him that,'' said Welsh, referring to former Tigers' coach Danny Ford, now at Arkansas. "We got our T-shirts, too.''

Ford told his players before the teams met in 1985 that Virginia had bought champagne and commissioned T-shirts to commemorate an expected victory. ""Danny lied to them,'' Welsh said.

KICKING WOES

On an otherwise memorable occasion for Virginia, junior place-kicker Rafael Garcia had a forgettable day, with two missed extra points.

One of the extra points and a 44-yard field-goal attempt were blocked. One extra-point try was wide right - the fourth PAT kick that the Cavaliers have missed this season.

""I don't know what's wrong,'' Welsh said. ""Something went bad. I can't figure it out. All those points make a difference, so I was upset. We've got to take a close look.''

INJURIES

Welsh said he expected as many of three of his four injured starters to return next week: linebacker Jamie Sharper (knee), running back Kevin Brooks (knee) and tight end Bobby Neely (ankle). Defensive end Eddie Robertson, helped from the field in the third quarter, was the only addition to the casualty list.

NEXT OPPONENT

The Cavaliers (4-1 overall, 3-0 ACC) entertain Wake Forest at noon at Scott Stadium. The Demon Deacons, winless prior to their game Saturday night at Navy, have lost 11 straight games to Virginia since 1984.
